help with utili-track removal??

hey everyone, whoever owned the truck before me tried removing the utili-track. It looks like they got a few bolts out of each and then couldn't get them out so gave up.

Well, now the piece on the back is bouncing around so loud i can hear it. Only two bolts left, but i CANNOT remove these suckers. I've tried everything i can think of. I was just wondering if there was some kind of contraption someone came up with to remove the tighter ones.

I've tried putting the vice-grips around the actual bolt and prying them around, striped two t40 torx bits (went out and bought dewalt ones after this and still can't move them), broke probably 3 screwdrivers trying to loosen these bolts, burnt up an old electric drill, with numerous other failures too.

put the pb blaster or whatever on them tonight so maybe that will help?? anyone else had a couple or more bolts the couldn't remove? just wanted to see if someone else had a method of getting these out.

titantalk has been helpful to me so far - helpful in getting my wife mad at me for my new projects every week, so hopefully someones got an answer, thanks.

Re: help with utili-track removal??

I stripped a couple out on mine trying to install a bedrug. I had to bust out the Impact to get all but three out, stripped the heads out so bad I just drilled them off and used vice gripped them out. Ordered a full set of bolts from Nissan for $20 or so.

Traded for now, will have one again eventually though! For now i'm sporting a 2012 Jetta 2.5SE

ok i'm pretty sure i'm just gonna drill them out then. Atleast on the front part thats bouncing around. i shouldn't need bolts anymore so i'll just trash them.

The bolts are pretty solid, so be sure you have some WD-40 laying around as you drill through.

Re: help with utili-track removal??

Why not get a set of replacement bolts from Nissan like someone said? The utilitrak is by far the handiest feature in my truck. I use it all the time.

I decided i'm not removing the who thing, just the front one that was rattling around. I did get it off, but i had to drill it out and i still can't get the rest of the bolts out. Haven't tried too hard to remove them yet though, i was just happy to stop the rattling.

and if i can ever get the whole set off i will be selling them, but that will probably be awhile since this one little piece was such a PITA.

man i've tried vice grips as tight as i can get them and it just kept spinning and stripping the already drilled out bolt even more. don't really wanna just drill the whole thing out just incase i ever wanted to put the track back on. highly doubt that because i don't have any of the attachments for it, but who knows i've seen some cheap on craigslist

Re: help with utili-track removal??

That is weird, I tightened mine down and really got some bite on them. You could try some PB or WD on the front and on the backside then give the vice grips another go.
