Synthetic Oil?

I am ready for my first oil change and would like to run Mobil 1 syn oil. The service manager at Patterson Nissan in Longview, TX. told me that if I ran syn oil, it would void the warranty on the engine.
Do any of you know about this?

My local dealer offers synthetic oil changes, I don't think they would offer it if it would void warranty??

B.S. If the the synth. oil you are using has the appropriate API rating, it's fine. Not all synthetics are API rated, however, so that may be the basis for what he is telling you. Do a search for Amsoil, Mobil-1 etc. lots of threads about motor oil.

That’s a ridiculous statement from your service manager. Any oil that meets or exceeds the proper API service ratings (SL) or ILSAC (GF III) and has the proper viscosity rating can be used. Nissan reccommends mineral - not requires - mineral based oil. I don't know why - maybe to discourage extended drain intervals.

The only exception seems to be the transmission which requires Nissan “J” type fluid. I’ll bow to that requirement because transmissions can be very picky on their fluid diet.

I think the issue you will run into is you still have to change the oil every 3750 to meet the warranty requirements.....so you don't get the benefit of the additional time between the oil changes synthetic offers.....

My mom uses synthetic oil on her 02 Altima and as far as I know, Nissan is fine with that. But the interval sounds about right from bestatchess....when I still had my tundra, the dealer would mark about 7000 miles forward on my little window sticker for when i needed an oil change. Always thought about doing synthetic, but since I used to goto Jiffy Lube or have the dealer do the change, always figured they would forget to do it and get regular oil back in there - too much hassle fighting with those guys to do it.

I don't care what anyone says but 7500 miles between changes with dino oil is way to long an interval, Unless all the miles where performed continuesly on the highway. There's a bunch of group III synths. that can't go that far. Toyota recommended 7500 with the sienna mininvans equipped with the 3.3L v6 and are now suffering sludging issues, same thing with dodge and the 2.7L v6 which irrehensibly they still make although these engines statisticly are all done at the 60K mile mark, although this engines design is so poor that the same issues occur with 3K mile oil changes. They did however recommend 7500 LOL. All fairness to chrysler the 2.7L is mitsubishi built, but they know its junk and still use it.

Either run chevron supreme and change it 4-5k miles, or run a PAO synth(mobil 1, GC 0w-30, amsoil, redline etc) and change it 7500. If your buying synthetic oil at wal mart and its not mobil 1, change it every 5k,cause its a group III oil.

I chanded to the Mobil 1 synthetic oil last night. I will still change it before 5000 miles.
Most of my miles are highway miles.

7500 miles....

I change mine every 7500 miles with Amsoil and plan to continue that. Got 15K without issues. I got an 86 K20 that has 130K miles on it doing the same thing without issues.
