1/4 wave branch resonator= NO MORE DRONE!

I 100% cured my annoying 1500-1900 rpm drone this past weekend. I had been doing some reading about branch resonators and figured I would give it a shot. The result is completely Amazing! I can only hear the exaust rumble now.....no resonance. Best of all I got it done with scrap pipe I had laying around.

Think of your tailpipe as a organ tube, it is naturally going to resonate at a certian frequency. A branch resonator is a capped tube attached at a 90 degree angle to the gas flow (does not negatively effect performance) and allows sound waves to enter, travel to the end, bounce back, and reenter 180 degrees out of phase. Think of those fancy noise cancelling headphones...same principle.

I originally made the tube 32" long but had to go to 35" to get it to work right. You can see some cool charts here that will give you an idea of where to start.

Re: 1/4 wave branch resonator= NO MORE DRONE!

****, might just do this to my 3" setup because the drone at highway speeds is killer. What's cool is this wont hinder any performance since it's sealed so no exhaust gasses will be trying to flow in there, disturbing flow. It's only to deal with sound resonance. Great concept and awesome utilization on the Titan side!

haha. i think it starts with some metal...

So how would I do this on a exhaust system that is dumped right out the muffler? I get drone like crazy, its funnny cause the drone is worse in the drivers seat than anywhere else in the truck. I found this out on the drive to chicago from az pulling a trailer.

I actually used my phone to record the interior noise and analyzed it before and after with Audacity on my computer. I had spikes at 118hz and 120hz (drone) before and they are gone now.

The exhaust at first impression was much quieter but it was just the drone that was gone. The exhaust grows in volume very linearly as the rpms increase. It is very pleasant. From the outside it sounds great except for the CIS, which I have always had. But hey, If we can figure out the frequency of the CIS, it can be cancelled also!

You would have to add just enougn pipe to be able to tee into it. From my research, I think it is most effective placed after the muffler.

Re: 1/4 wave branch resonator= NO MORE DRONE!

I was just about to mention the Ark exhaust systems ^. I was close to getting a G37s and planned on getting the Ark exhaust because they advertised to be drone free.

It's the same concept as intake resonators are used in many factory setups. For some reason folks remove them thinking it'll make more power.

Re: 1/4 wave branch resonator= NO MORE DRONE!

Subscribed to this, I get drone from 1600-1900. I have a dynomax dual exhaust kit with gutted rear cats. I think I would have to run this off both my tail pipes in order for it to work. Or maybe put a resonator in place of the rear cats ? I dont know which way to go yet
