Tab on the step rails?

I've got an LE, with the factory step rails, but what's up with the little tab that extends down about a half inch from the end of the factory step rail mounting bracket. They are easily visible from a distance from my truck, and I don't really care to see them. Do they really serve any purpose?

Can I just grind off these tabs, or should I heat-bend them back, and put a couple spot welds on them for structural support?
