Some basic questions about differentials

Excuse my ignorance about this subject. I plan on checking my diff. fluid this weekend since everyone has had some concerns about it being low or having metal shavings in it.

Q1- For the rear differential, how much oil does it hold and do you have to use a thread sealer when replacing the fill plug and drain plug?

Q2- Where in the heck is the front differential? Anyone got a pic?
I don't see anything in the front that looks like the ball-type shape like in the rear. And does the same thing apply to the front as the back? Same amount of oil and use a thread sealer?

Thanks for helping me out.

A1) Get 3 qts (will use about 2.5) for rear and fill til it starts coming out the fill plug. Yes, use thread sealer on the plugs.

A2)You dont have one since you have a 4x2 model.

Make sure that your truck is on level ground, otherwise the old lube won't all drain out. Also needs to be level to get correct amount during refill. Level both directions for this work. Have fun, don't get greasy :-)

This pic might help you some. I did it up for another one of our forum members here. There's some more pics with information listed on them if you need to see more, just click on my truck pics link above the pic of my truck.
