LOL, I said that I would never own a pickup, but look at me now. My Neighbor his a Ford Diesel its very nice, he must have done somthing to it, because the turbo is loud when it spools up.

A diesel in a Titan would, for me, need to be an inexpensive upgrade and a large boost in performance. Diesels seem to get somewhat better mileage but if it is like the powerstoke, a $3000 option, it would need to get about 30 MPG to make it worthwhile in my opinion.

Diesels are not for everyone.

30mpg out of a 4x4 is getting close but I don't think the big three are quite there yet.

But if upgrading performance is your cup of tea then the diesel is in my opinion the only way to go.

Re: Nissan Diesel

Diesel? No thanks. If I wanted a truck that sounded like a dryer full of marbes, I'd have bought a Silverado. Our trucks pull more than fine for my use.

Re: Nissan Diesel

I work for a construction company that has a fleet of about 400 1/2 and 3/4 trucks (all Fords), and diesels just don't pencil out in fuel economy versus the added upfront cost for typical use. Their analysis is based on a 150k mile turnover. The only diesels in the fleet are dedicated to towing.

Re: Nissan Diesel

I can't think of a current diesel powerplant that does NOT have a turbo. A 21-24 MPG Turbo Diesel Titan would be awesome.
I owned a used 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins for about a year and WOW! That Cummins inline 6-cylinder powerplant is awesome. Step on the gas and it moves! Loved the mileage as well. I remember I towed a Sea-Doo plus a bed full of camping gear from the LA area to Laughlin Nevada and getting 21.4 mpg doing 75 mph. The truck never even felt the inclines on the freeway because of the massive amount of torque. You have to drive one and experience the torque yourself to be a diesel fanatic. If members have some free time I would recommend test driving a Dodge Ram with a Cummins powerplant just for kicks and giggles. If you drive your Titan to the Dodge dealer be prepared to hold back on making an offer using your Titan as a trade in! Yes, the Cummins powerplant is that awesome.
I prefer the inline 6 cylinder simplicity of the 5.9L Cummins over the more complicated Ford PowerStroke V8 or the Chevrolet DuraMax V8. The new Dodge diesels are also much quieter than the model I had. Dodge stuffed a bunch of noise insulation under the hood to quiet down the diesel clatter.
I would have considered purchasing a Cummins powered Dodge Ram QC over the Titan CC if the price difference wasn't so great. Even after major discounting a new Cummins powered Ram would cost around $33K. I know this is a Titan owner forum, but knowing you can easily get 300-500K miles out of a Cummins diesel before a rebuild is pretty cool!

I have no idea what you drove, but I've driven my neighbor/friends 03 Dodge 2500 Cummins numerous times towing and non-towing and yes, it has the torque to tow anything anywhere, but aside from towing, it can't get out of it's own way without tripping. So if towing a heavy load often is what you do, you can't beat a good Diesel. Otherwise, I'd stick to a good beefy gas V8. Just my opinion I guess.

Re: Nissan Diesel

It was a 2000 2WD 3/4 ton Dodge Ram automatic extended cab longbed. No 4WD or Dually option.

A cummins with a programmer, exhaust and intake will beat our titans with ease. My friend removed his muffler and did some intake work and his is very fast, and gets well over 20 mpg.

Here in SoCal, diesel is more expensive than premium.

Re: Nissan Diesel

Nissan already sells a great diesel in the US.

http://www.udtrucks.com/product/mediumguts.htm

Allison tranny too. I would trade in tomorrow for a Titan with this.

Re: Nissan Diesel

He may be referring to this in line 6...

International® DT466
Through equal parts sophisticated technology and plain common sense, International ® DT 466 engines deliver performance, reliability, durability and low cost of ownership. The International DT 466 engine features ratings from 210 to 300 hp and peak torque from 520 to 860 lb-ft and is available with economy drive lines. For medium-duty applications, there's no better engine to own, operate and maintain.

This Caterpillar 7.2L In line 6 would also be awesome in the Titan. I am surprised none of the Big 3 have an exclusive deal with Cat to supply diesels for their full size pick up trucks. Stick a nice "Caterpillar" logo on the front doors, fenders, and tailgate, and watch hard core diesel pick up truck buyers flock to purchase one!

C7 7.2L Mid-Range Engine: Pure Value
Maximum Mid-Range Versatility

Superior durability based on proven 3126E components
A new Caterpillar® built HEUI oil pump, along with Cat exclusive "leak-free" technology, provide unsurpassed reliability
Lower emissions and decreased engine noise from Caterpillar patented HEUI™ fuel system
Enhanced performance from electronic wastegate-controlled turbocharger
The C7 on-highway engine continues the tradition of bottom-line value. A wide range of horsepower ratings—all the way up to 330 hp for fire trucks and RVs -- ensures a perfect fit for a variety of applications. This engine features the Caterpillar HEUI fuel system for unsurpassed performance and reliability. Full electronic controls include features typically found only on heavy duty engines. Both front and rear power take-off (PTO) options are available to fit your specific application. The C7 is a sophisticated mid-range engine suitable for a wide variety of vocational applications, from construction and utility jobs to pick-up and delivery, School Bus, RV and emergency vehicles.

Specifications
Cylinders In-Line 6
Bore/Stroke 4.33 x 5.00 (110mm x 127mm)
Displacement 7.2 L (441 cu in)
Weight 1295 lb (588 kg)
Horsepower 190 to 350 @ 2400 rpm
