There's no need to pull my trailer with a Diesel. That would just be overkill. I don't like the way Diesels put power to the ground. I bought a 1/2 ton because that's what I need. I also need to be able to drive on Parkways...something a 3/4 and 1 ton can't do here.
I've raced my buddys 04 F-350 4X4 Diesel and was amazed at just how slow that thing actually was. The F-150 is also slow compared to other 1/2 ton trucks. But no, sorry...unless dad fell asleep at the wheel, no stock F-350 would take the F-150 with the 5.4L motor. Dad wanted you to feel good....lol.

Re: Nissan Diesel

your friend probably just went from a dead stop and floored it so yeah then you'll take him no problem, but all i'm saying is if you build up the boost before, just enough so the tires dont break loose, then these trucks launch off the line like crazy, slam you back into your seat, i'm not sayin your trucks are bad but you saying that diesels are slow is just so wrong

Relative to a gasoline powered truck of the same size, they're slow. I've driven them all. You can spool up the turbo all you want, they just don't rev high enough, fast enough. They're meant for high tq at low RPMs for heavy hauling. That's not good for speed. Oh it may push you back in your seat...but only for a second or so. Whereas (and we'll use the Titan as an example) the Titan will throw you back in the seat....and keep you there while you pass that Diesel.
Diesel trucks are fantastic for their intended purpose. Need to haul a heavy trailer, get decent MPG and not know the trailers back there at times?....you can't beat a good Diesel motor in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. But unless you throw some real money at it, it's still just a heavy hauler and won't have the speed of a truck like the Titan...or HEMI or otherwise. "Slow" is relative, and we all have an opinion as to what "fast" is but...well...you get my point.

Re: Nissan Diesel

ok, so have you just driven standards then? the autos are always in the powerband every shift, where as with the standards you generally loose your boost with every shift

I have driven standards but no....the buddy with the 04 F-350 has the automatic. And the boost isn't always right where it needs to be. Every shift still eats power and the turbo is not fully spooled up like a brake torqed start would be. Go do that same brake torqed start with the likes of a Titan or HEMI and you'll then understand.

Re: Nissan Diesel

It shouldn't matter if it is automatic or manual for the Powerstroke, it uses a VVT turbocharger and doesn't have a wastegate. The problem is the code in the ECU, when it sees the low throttle position on the gas pedal, it opens up the A/R to reduce boost. So to beat the "brain" you have to do some funky throttle work but it can be done no matter what the drivetrain is. Thats what I learned after a few hours on the test track anyway.

But it does make a difference. You can put a load on the engine by brake torqing....enough to spool up the turbo. Can't be done like that on a standard transmission truck....unless you're really good with that E brake.

Re: Nissan Diesel

Toyota or Nissan I don't care but I am buying the first one to come out with a decent full size diesel. I traded my 97 Dodge diesel for my 2004 Titan. No regrets but that Dodge had all the towing cababilty of my Titan and 20 MPG. Yea yea I know the specs. and the Dodge was slow off the line. In hot weather I always had two sets of keys and just left the Dodge idling in the parking lot with the AC on. It could idle all day on a gallon of diesel and would be 65 degress when you got back in. The new high RPM diesels being developed by Ford and Nissan may be just the ticket.

Re: Nissan Diesel

Forget the cat and cummins donks the new breed of diesels will I believe come out of Renault and will be speced to exceed 2010 cal emmission standards.

Nissan au. dropped the 4.2 turbo this year and are only importing the 3 lt.td but the toyota came out with a v8 turbo diesel that drinks like a sailor on shore leave.Where that leaves Nissan in sales will force them to go bigger probably the 300hp in line 6 from Renault better power and fuel miser.

Could be wrong though

Re: Nissan Diesel

I did some work for my bro in law last week hauling scrap metal(number 1) with his 06 dodge cummins dually. Heaviest load at the scrap yard was 28,000lbs both truck and dump trailer, i believe the truck itself is in the the 8K lb range. thats close to pulling 20K lbs lol, engine had no issue, kinda slow on the steeper grades, naturally, but pulled 12.5mpg at 70mph on the highway. What makes the diesel special in my mind is even when overtasked, it never feels like its struggling. Not a fan of the dodge gasser trucks at all, but their diesel packaged trucks are very impressive. If their new powertrain lifetime warranty applies to their diesel trucks, its a no brainer, i'm guessing it doesn't though.

Re: Nissan Diesel

No, the Dodge Lifetime Powertrain Warranty does not extend out into the Diesel or the SRT lineup of cars and trucks. Next time you see the commercial, it states it right down at the bottom of the screen.

That's a myth that was clearly busted by the Mythbusters.

Nice try though!
