Ssooooo I got the knock from hell :l and I've been reading up on the posts to which actuator it may be. But now I'm lost is there 3 or 2 actuators. I'm certain its not the one inside the dash, since I have control over the cold & heat. But my A/C is stuck on def and its hot as hell here in south TX. So I guess I'm asking is there only one on top of the gas pedal or is there 2? Also, I used to get the knocking from the passenger side, does that make a difference or is it just traveling through the vents. I've always ddone the work myself so any help is greatly appreciated.
When do you have the knocking? is it when you switch from defrost to feet and face or is it when you change the temp control ? Do you have control over your temp in the truck at all? If it is when temp is changed then it is the actuator behind the glove box area which I have read is a royal PIA. If it is when you change where the heat is going then it's the actuator above the gas pedal. I recently changed that one out and it cured my knocking that happened when I change from defrost to anything else. It was not terrible to do either, pull 3 bolts from the ECU i think and move it out of the way then there are 3 screws on the actuator, 2 on the bottom and one on top. THe 2 bottoms are 7mm I think and that top one is 5.5 mm I believe, I know it was different.
Hope I have helped out and good luck.

I just bought truck and it does the same thing.
The funny thing is, the part I need was sitting in my glovebox. So obviously the dealership knew of the problem.
Currently battling them over this.
I had this problem about 3 months after I got the truck. Still under warranty, got the stealership to fix. Took them about 4 hours... well that is how long it took them to call me saying it was done. On mine it was the one above the gas pedal too.

I FIXED IT!!! lol I found the actuator that was faulty, it was the one on top of the pedal. You could hear the whining from the actuator when it was on the vent, but when it was on defrost it would get quiet.......sssoooooooo I left it alone but I shifted the white plate myself, and viola I got my vents working again ^_^
Thanks for all the input. And for kbagder3, I have control over the control of the A/C and heat. So I ruled that one out quickly, i just finally got a chance yesterday to work on it. Thanks once again.
Just pushed the left side up. Lay on your back and look up at it, push the left side up. I'm assuming that if yours is stuck on defrost as mine as, it should be down. So to get your vents back push it up and you'll hear it shift inside, and viola.
Ok thanks - mine isn't stuck - it rotates to the closed position after turning the key to OFF - but at the fully closed position it clicks about 15 times - probably due to a missing tooth or something as described on here

That is exactly what mine was doing. I swapped out the actuator and the problem went away.
