Ethanol

I was reading an article in the local paper the other day and it seems Hawaii is very close in passing a law that will mix a percentage of ethanol in to normal gasoline. Not only for energy savings but to begin to build up energy alternatives and for local companies to begin expansion and researching energy alternatives. The article mentioned all vehicles built after a certain date which I already forgot is compatible w/blended gasoline (ethanol). My previous vehicle had a sticker in the gas cap that said it was compatible but I notice the Titan does not. The article also mentioned that the state of California already is doing that with ethanol everywhere. I was unaware of that I go up there every now and then and did not notice any pumps indicating that. I wanted to ask you Cali. guys is that the case? All your pumps are blended w/ethanol? I doubt it as vehicles built before a certain year cannot use that. The article mentioned "there is no siginificant evidence" of damage that can occur in the engine using methanol. However Petro experts are saying that won't save the consumer any money or the state any energy because you do not get better gas mileage and you would have to fill up more often. Anyway any thoughts or comments on the matter would be appreciated.-Thanks

Here is a little history on Ethanol: http://www.journeytoforever.org/ethanol.html

From what I get from multiple sources on the forum and elsewhere blending Ethanol in gasoline produces a higher octane gasoline which in turn leads to better gas mileage. It may not be cheaper but by adding the additive we also become less oil dependant. Which in turn will help lower gasoline prices.

I remember reading something about this in the owner's manual (which I don't have withme right now). I think it said not to use gasoline with more than 5% ethanol. Check your owner's manual.

Question

What is the effect of this highly oxygenated fuel on your engine, rings, seals, catalytic converter, etc. ? Also, how do MTBE's play into this?

Our blends here are 10c cheaper per gallon but I have stayed away for fear of corrosion.

This guy thinks not: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/gener...a102100a_2.htm

Here we have a 10% blend. I have used this for the past ten years and have not had any problems. I have had more than one vehicle with over 200,000 miles on them.
