FUN with a vette today

I almost forgot to mention this…. This morning on the way to work I was at a stop light with only a 68 vette in front of me. It was in mint shape with matching British green historical colored license plate, sounded nice too.

Well I wasn’t really awake yet just listening to talk radio checking out his car with my arm rested on the so-very-well-placed door armrest and the light turns green and the guy punches it (scared the s outta me) and woke me right up! My instinct was to floor it so I did and I never drove so close to anyone’s bumper in my life which was completely irresponsible and dangerous.

All this guy could see in his rear view mirror was a big ol' chrome grill with a Nissan emblem on it and he wasn’t gaining so much as an inch and I kept letting off the gas briefly as I got to close. He gave it all he got and smoke was billowing from his dual exhaust badly. We got to the next light and he was turning left and I was turning right with a semi in the center lane. He gave it a quick rev once we came to a complete stop. I just had a big grin on my face as I turned the corner.

Just thought I would share that bit of fun. I dont know where he thought he was going.

if it was smoking, he obviously had some blow-by or maybe another oil leak issue somewhere. Anyways, that indicates an engine problem. Every vette owner I know could smoke my truck in an instant.

If it is "billowing smoke" under hard acceleration it needs some work. Maybe the rings are shot or a couple of plugs aren't firing or something.

Even the lamest stock '68 vette had 300 HP and weighs a ton less than the Titan.

Someone needs to look this up.. Are you sure a 68 vette stock has 300hp? I'm not too sure with a small block. Wasn't that still a 327 then? I had a boss van featured in magazines and everything with a built 327 putting out 325 hp 11-1 compression. this was a 65 GMC Handyvan in 1972 So 68 vette.... ??

Plus they used to cheat like crazy on hp ratings in them days. (I graduated in 66 and had a 61 vette)

Still.... a 68 vette expects to run a truck. Poor guy.
And it IS fun. I've had nothing but SUV's and GMC trucks for some time and it is fun to see how many trucks want to race now or push you on the highway. Reminds me of my vette days when everyone wanted to race.

Great story.

Black smoke right? that means the vette was running rich, which means he floored it, so I don't think there nothing wrog with the vette, my old 280ZX would do that when the pedal hit the metal

Okay, this is not directed at anybody specific - but I am honestly getting a little bothered by some guys claiming that the Titan has beaten certain cars, sports cars in particular. Now, I don't intend to call anybody a liar, and we all know that our trucks are pretty darn fast, respectively - but they WILL NOT out-accelerate any decent sports car, or even most sedans. Heck, I have been beaten by a freakin PT Cruiser Turbo - the guy obviously knew how to shift. I have owned a pretty good list of cars, sports cars and semi-exotics included - and not one of them would fail to show it's taillights to my Titan, even on a bad day. Don't get me wrong guys, I LOVE my truck - and for some reason it gives me MORE grins than my M3 - but it isn't fast compared to any somewhat performance oriented sedan or coupe: not in the days of 200+ HP minivans and 250+ HP "family sedans". ---Rant over.

I own a 82 collector edition corvette and a XE 4X4 Titan. The only way the Titan wins is in the mud, snow, ice or high water.

Sure it's possible for the Titan to beat a car. Sometimes it's more driver than machine. Maybe since it was smoking, the Vette had some mechanical issues that wasn't allowing it's full potential.

Sometimes, it's just the circumstances. I once raced my 98 Maxima against a ZX6 Ninja and WON. Three times at different stop lights! The thing is, I owned a ZX6 at the time, and I knew it would smoke my car EASILY, but the clown that was riding his Ninja had no idea how to shift or launch correctly, so my 15 sec (1/4 mile) car beat his 11 sec bike every time. And yes, the guy was definitely trying to race me.

I take all "kill stories" with a grain of salt. The 'man over the machine, and the condition of the machine has a lot to do with it.

yes but it was a different horsepower measure back then. the measure used today didn't start until I think '71. the '68 corvette would have been rated in the 225-240 horsepower with the current rating system. juma

3210 weight and 225 flywheel HP gives 14.9 in the 1/4

Actually, there are lots of Corvettes that were dogs! Pick any stock one from 75-82 (esp those crossfire ones...no offense squid). My neighbor has a modded (heads/cam/headers, but still that pesky crossfire) '82 and it is still a dog. They would probably run neck and neck with a Titan.
