hi guys. Wish i knew more about engines and vehilces I just don't. More of a computer guy. Regardless..need some help / advice on 2 issues i am noticing on my 2005 KC BT 4x4 LE 129.xxx miles
1. when i accelerate tranny shifts very smooth. On occasion though as the truck slows down it will downshift quite hard and knock a bit when it gets to about 25 mph. Thing is....it doesn't happen every time. Should this be a concern??
2. From reading I think i might also have the cracked manifold issue. I just noticed a ticking or wafting of air that lasts for 30 sec's or so when i start down the road on a cold start. What are my concerns if I don't get this fixed besides the lower mpg and horse power?
Thanks guys...i please ask you to dumb down your answers if possible so a guy like me can understand.
$100 says you have cracked manifolds. Mine did the exact same thing. Get it fixed asap or you could have total cat failure which could result in engine damage. As far as the tranny can't comment there but im sure someone will chime in shortly.

Regarding the exhaust manifold. It's very likely you have a cracked manifold. They fail quite often. Usually around 80xxx miles.
The manifold is connected to your primary catalytic converter. (Basically an air scrubber that helps keep the truck from running rich-aka burning more fuel than is needed)
The repercussions of cracked manifold will be an exhaust leak, poor engine performance, and poor fuel mileage.
In addition it has the Potential to destroy your engine. The primary cat can be broken down due to the rich exhaust gas and then sucked back into the cylinders.
It happened to me. Ruined my 7&8th cylinder...
It's something you need to fix either with aftermarket headers to avoid a future problem or with stock manifolds.
Edit: I also recommend if you do aftermarket headers you get a set of Cajun catted b-pipes. Great price, and great performance. You won't be disappointed.
also...if i would decide I just don't want to deal with it and would rather trade it in on something else...do you think the dealer would look that closely at the truck to see it has those issues?

A dealer would spot cracked manifolds in a heartbeat

Dude, No way.
Explain to me how they sold me a truck with 2 cracked manifolds and a misfire. Dam check engine light was on and those sleezes used the obd2 to turn it off....
They paid for everything though

damn. so for anyone who has had this fixed what can i expect to pay to have this fixed?
Unless it's a blown seal, the dealership would replace the stock manifold.
It would not be wise to do another one so as has been suggested, getting aftermarket one's is a good idea.
I have the JBA shorties that have the cats flanged out to avoid the scenery of having to remove the headers to replace the cats should they go defective.
I have Catco cats and Stillen b-pipes with their cats welded on to the pipe.

was there a recall or something that the dealer would replace the stock manifold? My truck is out of warranty

Should have been a recall because every 04-07 titan out there will have cracked manifolds eventually even the newer titans have the issue though not as frequent. Jba longtubes, catted Cajun bpipes and uprev will run you about $1350 for parts. If you can get by with catless cajuns and have a flex fuel titan and get by without a uprev tune knock off half that cost. With these mods you will be fixed and your titan will run like never before. I guarantee it will put a smile on your face.
So are the manifolds something I could have the dealer check for free??? or is that big of a pain in the *** that I will get charged for them looking at them?
The dealer isn't going to check your truck for free - it's an 05 with 130k miles. You're done on the warranty. Most dealers will add the cost of checking it to the work if you get the work done there. It's got to go on the lift and takes some detection work to check.
Repairing cracked manifolds isn't going to be cheap, over a grand for sure. I had mine done, but they were still under warranty on my 2004 because Nissan extended the warranty to 8 years/80k miles.
That said, it makes no sense to trade in a truck to avoid a $1000 repair unless the rest of the truck is on its way out. There are plenty of people on here that are at, near, or over 200k miles on their truck with no driveline trouble, which is usually the major cost of vehicle repairs.
To answer your other question, no - most dealers will have no idea that there's a manifold leak, nor will they care. They'll be making enough on you from the new car sale to absorb those kinds of repairs, and they will likely not even bother doing them. A truck with 130k miles is headed to the auction as soon as you trade it in, or to the dealer's "Part B" lot where they sell high-mileage vehicles.
If those are the only problems you're having I'd recommend sucking it up and fixing them. The Titan is a good truck (I've had 2, both 04's) that has a few weak spots but certainly nothing catastrophic. It's still the most truck you can buy for the money IMO, and my only loyalty to a car company is to sell me a good vehicle.

and does anyone have thoughts on the truck shifting hard / knocking when speeds come down to about 25mph? I bet it happens 50% of the time. Everything else is smooth!

Is the hard shift on the upshift or downshift, or does it matter? I can look at my manual when I get home and see what it lists as possibilities.
