Nissan Wants Heavy-Duty Titan with Diesel
Automotive News
Nissan North America Inc. wants to expand its lineup of Titan full-sized pickups by adding a heavy-duty version with a diesel engine, a top executive says. The automaker has not set a timeline. But it "does not have to redesign everything (in the Titan platform) to make a heavy-duty truck," says Patrick Pelata, Nissan Motor executive vice president for product planning and strategy. The heavy-duty Titan would need a "big American V-6 or V-8" diesel to have sufficient torque, Pelata says, adding that "we will not do it alone." Nissan has not determined whether it will buy a supplier's engine or seek a development partner

I havent heard who is the supplier, but CAT would be my first choice. Cat has already designed several engines for truck applications, plus it would dominate power stroke or cummins, not really worried about the duramax

How far down the road are we talking?
I'd love to see a Titan HD with the diesel (turbo?), beefier rear, rated 3/4 or 1 ton.
Now that would really give the big 3 a coniption fit, wouldn't it?

Dosent nissan produce its own diesels over seas and for our US UD tow and commercial trucks. I would like to see nissan use one of there on engines in there truck. I guess we will see
All i can say is how soon, Im considering a diesel, but the titan is just too good of a deal to ignore. 37L1 if they put them together Ill have a coniption along with the big three. Ah how the deal is getting sweeter

Morale of this story: back up what you say.
We already a choice of heavy duty trucks with diesel engines. While having a choice of one from Nissan would be very nice, I'm not looking to tow 15K lbs. The current light trucks from Nissan and Toyota are fine for me in terms of size and power but I'm not willing to spend over $100 to fill the tank with gas every third day. Why can't North Americans buy a light truck with a 4 or 6 cylinder turbo-diesel engine???
I would be happy with 1/2 ton diesel long bed with quadrasteer. But then again I am odd that way.
later,
Matt
That would be the ideal for my purposes too. Quadrasteer is the one truly great feature that GM still has all to themselves. But apparently almost no one has any use for a full size truck box any more....
I think there will be a lot more diesels available as soon as we get the low sulfur diesel in 2006/07. With low sulfur diesel it will be easier for the manufacturers to meet emissions requirents.

I wouldn't touch a V6 or even a V8 diesel with a 10 foot pole. A V configuration makes absolutley no sense in a diesel app. Come on Nissan, get your head of the gutter and use an inline 6.

Uh.. one of the best performing and most reliable diesels ever produced was the 8v92 with or without turbo by Detroit Diesel in the 80' and 90's. Detoit Diesel and Cummins both make V configuration Diesels. Technology has come a long way since the straight six days.

The most reliable, powerful, simple and strongest diesel used currently in a pickup truck currently is the Cummins, an I-6. An inline 6 uses 7 main bearings, a V6 uses 4 and a V8 uses 5, which one do you think would have the strongest bottom end. When an engine is producing in excess of 600 ft/lbs of torque for hundreds of thousands of miles this is a huge advantage for the I-6. You also get an even firing order with the inline 6, a powerstroke every 120 deg. of crankshaft rotation contributing to a perfect primary and secondary balance. A v config requires heavy counterweights on the crank. Also in a turbo configuration an Inline design allows the turbo to mounted closer to the head and capture more energy from the exhuast gasses, a V design requires the turbo to be much more downstream. The only advantage I can come up with for a V design is packaging size, thats about it.
i dont know much about his subject, ive heard over and over again that a inline 6 is a inherently balanced design right out of the box. MY question is would a inline 8 be balanced to or not?
