Titan Recall

Hey Guys

I got a recall letter yesterday from Nissan Motor Coorp. They claim some thing about the seat belt system does not meet federal safety standards. They have recall my Titan and asked that I take it to my dealership for replacement of the seat belt system. I dont have the letter infront of me right now but thats the short story. I was wondering if anyone else got a similar letter.

Thanks

Seat Belt Recall
Actually this might be something new. While it does mention the replacement of the rear seatbelt assembly (look further down for explanation), I think this one is new since it speaks of the need to replace the column shifter assembly.

From letter received today in US Mail

The transmission shift lever assembly for the column shifter may have been damaged during manufacture. This could allow the shift levr to be moved out of the Park (P) position without the key in the ignition or when the key is in the ignition switch in the lock, off or accessory position. In some situations, the ability of the shift lever to be moved out of the Park position could result in rollaway of the vehicle and cause a crash.

The shift lever assembly will be replaced. Also, your Nissan dealer will replace the outboard rear seat belt assemblies with new ones, which have a larger, more energy-absorbent upper D-ring cover and D-ring. THis will enable the vehicle to meet the FMVSS 201 standard at this location.

From http://www.nissanhelp.com/Recalls/Titan/2004.htm - sept 22 2004

Nissan has determined that some 2004 model year Nissan Titan King Cab and Crew Cab vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 201 – Occupant Protection in Interior Impact. FMVSS 201 specifies certain requirements for components othe upper interior of vehicles such as roof rails and pillars to assure they afford appropriate protection in the event an occupant’s head strikes the component in a crash. Nissan has determined that an area on the rear pillar where the rear seat belt upper anchor is attached may not be sufficiently energy absorbent. This could result in an increased risk of injury if the area is struck in some types of crashes. All other requirements under FMVSS 201 and other standards are met.

Well I got my seatbelt recall in the mail today. I just feel it is really ****ty that this wasn't taken care of Thursday when I dropped my truck off to have the rear center seatbelt replaced. I am really losing faith in my dealership. But what am I going to do, it is next to my work and the next dealership is about 30 miles away.

Most dealers are not going to do work that was never requested to be done. Yeah, it's great customer service if someone comes along and suggests 'hey while you're here, can we take care of this issue for you as well'. In the service industry today, that's not gonna happen very often unfortunately. I've been in the customer service field for almost 15 yrs and I tend to pay attention alot more than the average person. If companies truely cared about stuff like that, you wouldn't see them sending their jobs to India - one thing that customers where i work complain about is the language barrier. It's a money thing obviously, since most workers in India make 10% a month of what I actually make. Anyway, that's a whole other story.

Maybe I am spoiled, but when I brought my wife's Honda Pilot in for an oil change the other day at the Honda Dealership, I picked it up and they said to me "we fixed the two recalls on the vehicle and noticed a scratch on the arm plate where the power window buttons are. We are not sure that we did it, but we ordered another one, and we'll call you as soon as it comes in." They called today and the part is in. That is service. Anyone interested in knowing the name of the dealership in Metro New Orleans I'd be glad to let you know. PM me. My local Nissan dealership sucks, but my last Nissan p/u lasted me 10 years and I will only buy Nissan trucks from here on out, unless this one blows up on me.

Sounds like such dealer(s) could get themselves into legal trouble?

Excerpt of Nissan recall notice to dealers (bold text in excerpt bolded by Nissan):

Recall Date: SEP 22, 2004
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 5,600

Defect Summary:
Nissan has determined that some 2004 model year Nissan Titan vehicles may have a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety. There is a possibility that the transmission shift lever assembly for the column shifter may have been damaged during manufacture. The damage could eventually result in the failure of the portion of the assembly that holds the shift lever in the “Park” position when the key is not in the ignition or when the key is in the “Lock”, “Off” or “Accessory” position. This would allow the shift lever to be capable of being moved from “Park” without the key or when the ignition is in a position other than “On”. In some situations, the ability of the shift lever to be moved out of the Park position could result in rollaway of the vehicle and cause a crash.

Remedy:
To prevent this condition from occurring, Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to replace the shift lever assembly.

Voluntary Recall Campaign A/T Column Shifter

Campaign I.D. # / NHTSA #: RU403 / O4V-408

Applied Vehicle: 2004 Titan (A60)

Applied VIN: 1N6AA0***4N504115 - 505574 | 1N6AA0***4N527814 - 548997

Dealer Responsibility
It is the retailer's responsibility to check Service Comm for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary safety recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer's inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.

I was at the dealer today getting an oil change, and requesting to order a radio for the fading issue, which they did. Th assistant service manager lso said my Titan is affected by the seat belt recall, and would do it in a couple of weeks when the radio comes in. They said half a day. I asked if he could do it on Saturday. He said they usually don't do warranty work on Saturdays, but he would have a Nissan tech come in and do it. Sounds like pretty good service to me ... we'll see what happens.
