Question Brake Question

Sometimes when I'm completely stopped at a redlight my truck seems to kinda jump forward while I have the brakes completely applied. It almost feels like I get rear ended by a car or something so I always look in my rearview. Its kinda freaky if im stopped pretty close to the car in front of me. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks

I have felt the same sensation. It's very slight, but it freaks me out too.

loss of brake fluid pressure? Can you push the pedal down even farther AFTER this creaping occurs? Check your reservoir, make sure it is at full.
This happened on my old Dodge and I needed a new master cylinder and 'ABS?' compressor. But that thing was 10 years old and 175,000 miles (2 engines, 3 trannies, time to go....)

btw, I haven't experienced this in my truck.

My '89 GMC 1500 used to do this constantly. Sometimes it would thunk while at a stop and I was sure I had just been rear ended. Really spooky! I never had it fixed. It didn't get worse, nor better, through ten years of ownership. It seemed to be in the brakes. If after I came to a stop, I let the brakes off just ever so slightly and rolled forward a few inches, it wouldn't happen. Almost like the brakes were binding or grabbing, then as hydraulic pressure bled off a bit they (calipers) would pop loose and give that little thunk.

This problem has been discussed at great length on TundraSolutions.com. My 2000 Tundra did this occassionally. It had something to do with the driveshaft needing extra lubrication on the zerk fittings where the spline fits together. Sorry I'm not more mechanically adept to explain this better. I've heard the Titans have no lube fittings anywhere on the chassis though. Perhaps someone can explain what I'm refering to a little better.

I have felt this on my Jeep before. I think it is the auto tranny downshifting into first after you stop. This causes a minor drivetrain lurch if there is tension on the driveline still after you stop. If you stop, then let off the brake quickly to relieve the driveline I bet it will not do it. Just a thought.

This sounds like the Toyota problem alright, but be careful with lubrication. There are many posts on the Toyota sites about this issue and many have been able to grease the slip joints to get rid of the problem. In many cases, however, the problem returns AND there has been some discussion that lubing this joint too much can cause other problems. There is a good post about this here:

It seems this has been a problem with Toyota for many years. My understanding is that it is not serious and goes away after some time.

There is a brake booster test written in the manual. Follow the test instructions and if your brakes do not pass that test take it in to the dealer.
