SE Chrome Mirrors

Does anybody know if the chrome on the SE standard mirrors is a cap or if it is the actual housing? I don't want to start prying at it and break it. I saw on another post that someone said they put chrome caps on there XE mirrors. I would like to get rid of the chrome but can't trade with an XE because I want to keep the power and heat. Just curious if anybody has tried this or not.

Jim

Maybe you could have them painted black, or match the truck color.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking but my bodyshop guy frowns on painting chromed parts. He said with the labor involved it would be cheaper to buy unchromed parts and paint them and sell the chrome stuff. But that's were I run into the problem with the mirrors, they are not available unchromed with power and heat. Oh well, nothings ever easy I guess.

I wonder if you can buy parts for the housing? Maybe go to the parts counter, if they have one you could look at it and maybe it will give you an idea of how it goes together.

I'll take 'em for $30 (as long as they are not damaged). I'm in NY so what kind of shipping are we looking at? Sorry but I'm a little computer dumb, I don't know how to PM you! If you could give me your email or email me @qwikwhip@nycap.rr.com we can go that route. Thanks!

Yes, the caps come off. You will use a small tool and go inside next to the mirror and depress the plastic flanges so they can pop off. I had my BT mirrors chrome caps sanded and painted, took about an hour, was charged $100 by local body shop, looks great, no chipping just tons of bugs
