differential fluid change

hey guys, i finally decided to check my differential fluid, i opened the plug and stuck my finger in, the fluid wasnt to low, but when i took my pinky out it came out coated in what looked like sand in black cola, i freaked out and went to buy some gear oil, i put in 75W90 sin oil, when i drained it it was completely black and smelled like rotten eggs, it was horrible, i STRONGLY recommend everyone to check theres asap if you havent already, btw i had 58XX km on my truck when i checked it, im realli glad i looked today

Yep, based on the many reported case of this mess, seems that Nissan ought to have a TSB out on the rear diff at least.

i had mine changed this week to mobil 1 75w90. the guy that changed it said that diff fluid is the worst smelling fluid on a vehicle. i think everyone's stinks. but, mine looked ok, and not a lot of gunk on the drain plug.

Yep, mine was burned and black after only 2k miles, and got hot enough to burn the paint off the rear diff cover. I wouldn't be surprised if the diff goes before 30k miles. Just a guess.

I did mine yesterday and it took just over 2 quarts. With 3500 miles on the truck (no towing) the factory oil was very dark and the magnet had a good 1/8" thick buildup of metal sludge on it.

I changed mine (it was low) at about 200 miles. Like many of you I put in Moble1. Gear oil usually does smell but that was the rankest of any I've ever done. I'll probably change mine again at 5000 just to see what kind of wear it shows.

A note to you do it yourself'rs. Always take off the fill plug first. Shouldn't be a problem on your Titans, but I know of folks that took out the drain plug first and couldn't get the fill plug out.
You can drain (suck) and fill from the fill plug. It's a little difficult to fill from the drain plug.

i did both front and rear. the front calls for 3 3/8 pints, which equals 54 oz, and we ended up putting in about 56 to reach the fill plug. in total, buy 4 quarts and you should have 4-6 oz left over.
