I was shopping at Walmart last night, and noticed the latest issue of Truck Trend is out. This month(s), they are doing an "Ultimate 4x4 Offroad Challenge", and compared the Mercedes G55, Jeep Rubicon, a Land Rover, Hummer H1, Hummer H2 SUT, Lexus 470, and a NISSAN TITAN
At the end of the article, the Titan ended up getting 3rd, losing to the Mercedes (2nd) and the Land Rover (1st) as Ultimate 4x4 Offroad Vehicle.
It's a good read, and even better publicity for our beloved Titan. The Titan crushed everyone in the Sand Race, and had the 2nd lowest price.
A second article was in Truck Trend about vehicles for tall people, and the Titan was listed as the Number 1 truck for XLT people (people over 6'3")
I am 6'7" and the Titan is a good fit. The F150 was good also. The Dodge sucked. I didn't try the Chevy or Toyota for other reasons.

They left out the VW T-Reg?!! What kinda crap is that. After all the thing goes head to head with Range Rovers. All in all that review seems like a pretty odd bunch to compare anyhow.
Did you notice how the HUM-V did the worst on trails? That thing is supposed to be the ultimate production off-roader, but fell short due to wide wheel base. The Jeep did well on tight trails, as did the narrow G55.
I Still can't believe the Titan beat the SUPERcharged 5.5L V8 Benz. That is unreal. The article noted Tire size as the big beneficial factor that the Titan 4x4 had going for it. The titan they tested was a CC w/OR package, so I'm sure the lighter KC would have done even better in the Sand Drag event.
I am the guy standing at the magazine rack when I'm supposed to be helping find some obscure grocery item that is who-knows-where in the store. This always makes the girlfriend very happy, finding me reading a truck or motor magazine. I get the rolling of the eyes alot when I find the TITAN in a magazine at the news stand.

I'm the guy that shows up at the grocery store at 11 pm to do grocery shopping, gets distracted by MT / C&D / R&T, finishes shopping at 12:05 am, and to realize it's past 12 am and I can no longer legally buy the beer I have in my shopping cart.

Sigh.
They said they only tested the vehicles that the manufactures / advertising agencies proclaimed to be the BEST offroad vehicles (Jeep w/ "Trail Rated" commercials, TITAN with "Armada Sand Dune" commercials, Hummer with "Like Nothing Else (because you can't get much worse)" commercials, etc.).
I liked the article though. Most magazines just compare 1/2 Ton trucks w/ 4x4 and offroad packages, or midsized luxury SUV's, or whatever. This magazine answers the questions (which probably a lot of members here ask), "what is better at offroading, my TITAN or a HUM-V that costs 3 times as much?" and "is the Hummer H2 POS really an overprice soccer-mom transporter?"

I work with hummers(H1's) every day and I would not buy an H2 with anyones $$$$. They are pieces of pooooh!! There is nothing similar between thw 2 besides the name "HUMMER".

The Touraeg is not a serious offroader. Despite what the magazines may tell you. I spent a week with one in Germany with the V10 diesel. It will do 140 on the Autobahn, but I would be loath to take it off road.

Not having read the article myself can someone tell me what the off road challenges were? Sand is mentioned according to the first post, but what else?
Reason I ask is I have a hard time believing the Jeep Rubicon didn't get better placing. Afterall selectable lockers front and rear should make this vehicle really stand out especially against the mercedes and yes even the Titan assuming all other test vehicles were equipped with 4x4 and 4lo. I may be a little bias here becasue I use my Jeep to do such activities on some of the hardest trails I can get to in and around NC. The Titan I believe wouldn't be able to do half as much as what I put my rig through or even a Rubicon for that matter.
I bought my Titan to primarily tow my jeep to such places.
Putting potential body damage aside for both the jeep and my Titan in an off road situation I'd bet on the Jeep all day long,(and yes I have a 4x4 CC with OR Package including e-locker) as for all the other vehicles mentioned, I remain very skeptical of this 'OR challenge' Land Rover and Rubicon aside.(unless of course someone will enlighten me as to what kind of terrain they used to achieve there results)
On the one hand, remember that the Titan was Four Wheeler Magazine's '04 Pickup of the Year. But I'm a pretty serious off-roader. I use my Armada SE Offroad 4x4 to tow my tricked out '77 Jeep CJ 5. It's running a Skyjacker 4" spring lift, nitrogen filled shocks, a 2" body lift, trimmed fenders to make room for 36" Superswampers, lockers both ends, special articulating rear shackles, reversed front shackles, a "double low" T-18 Ford transmission with 6:32 to 1 first gear, beefed up drive shafts and u-joints, Warn winch, and a whole bunch of stuff. I say this because the Rubicon is a serious off-road rig and have seen them keep up pretty well with some of our more specialized rigs going into some pretty bad places.
I'm happy that the Titan did so well in this test, but I want to read the article, because the Rubicon should have done better.

Glad you agree
Where do you go wheelin'? (Allied Beadlocks with TSL's on there way )

I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We have thousands of acres of national forests just north of here with many trails. The terrain is very flat, just a few small hills, but we get a lot of rain (over 60 inches a year) so, there are plenty "gumbo" mud situations. With use, the ruts get very deep. The pine forests are planted pretty thick, so the trails tend to be narrow, which gives vehicles like the CJ's a real advantage over the bigger rigs. What about you?
