Question Whats the deal with the HEMI?

I don't get it. Not that I race my truck around town but, at a red light today a new 1500 Ram HEMI CC pulled alongside me and asked me how I liked the Titan. After a few pleasant words, the light turned green (I wasn't ready and he got a half a truck length head start) and we got on it. Within about 4 truck lengths, his nose was just off my rear bumper. By about 10 or 15 truck lengths, I could see his entire truck in my rearview. At the next light he said "dayum that's got good go". I know we have only a few fl lbs of torque on the HEMI but its' supposed to have about 325 to 335 (depending on the vehicle its' in). Why isn't it able to keep up? Anyone else able to figure this out? It also tows much less than the Titan.

The HEMI doesn't transfer the HP to the ground well and the Titan has more torque

Did the Hemi have a jacka** behind it (Sounds like it might have)? That what I find most often rides in the interior of those trucks.

FYI, the Hemi also has a 5-spd tranny (though the 20" wheels dont help). I think the OP said it correctly when he said the Hemi is "supposed" to have 345hp (unless they have an unusually high drivetrain loss). Ihave seen them dyno between 230-250 rwhp.

Gear ratios in Titan and Hemi Dodge
4.11 axle 3.36 axle (big tow or off road)
Dodge 5 speed Nissan 5 speed
1st 12.3 12.8
2nd 6.9 7.0
3rd 4.1 5.1
4th 3.1 3.4
5th 2.8 2.8

As you can see the Titan has gearing advantages through fourth gear. The Titan's
first gear gives it a real advantage especially when combined with 300ft lbs of torque
at 1000rpm. The Hemi has more stuff at higher rpm's compared to the Nissan motor.

You wouldn't lose off that CC but if it had 18" tires and a good start, he would be very close.

As for the HEMI, I like it but I think the ratings on that engine are a little too high.

Our Titan HP ratings are underrated. It should be around 315-320HP

I just spoke with a friend who has a 04 Doge Hemi standard cab. He said the 5 speed in his truck is not a true 5 speed. He said that it is really a 4 speed with two 2nd gears. with one 2nd a little higher for passing. He has driven my truck and says the power is about the same but my trans, being a true 5 speed, is much better. I have never drove or even ridden in his, so I only know what he is telling me.

rholland, you are correct. The 45RFE(Hemi tranny) actually has an upshift and downshift for 2nd gear. That is why it is called a 5-speed. Kinda misleading...

More bang for our bucks

that's why i bought the titan, in comparison, we're paying less for more power on the titan. if you go with the big-3, you'll be crying to the bank.

The 5-speed has 2 OD ratios,(see below) beside the whole 2nd gear two ratio thing. My understanding is during upshifting, one second gear ratio is used, and while downshifting, the other 2nd gear ratio is used.
Seems like a lot of work for nothing....

Model First Second Third Fourth Fifth
545RFE* 3.00 1.67/1.50 1.00 0.75 0.50

The 2003-2004's 5th gear is 0. 67

Don't you guys think that the Titan all aluminum engine revs faster, I don't know of other engines, but ours revs very very fast, I would say the internals are lighter than Ford and Dodge engines
My 02 cents.

The moving parts are not aluminum. However, I think the DOHC does rev faster, my .02, YMMV.
