I think it would be cool to have a winch on a tow hitch that could slide into my receiver. You could leave the power wires with quick-disconnects under the bumper and plug it in when you get stuck. This would keep the weight off the front end where there is already alot of weight to begin with. When you are stuck, its easier most of the time to pull out in the opposite direction you were going when you got stuck.

Maybe someone has already thought of this and has it in production... off to google

Here we go:

$1000 seems steep though. WOW the 9500 lb weighs 112 lbs! That will break the back lifting into the bed. Maybe go for a lighter hydraulic unit.

Yep, been done...

I used to see them advertised in catalogues a while back. I thought it was a great idea to have one on a receiver hitch, then have a receiver in front and back. That way, like you said, you could get out the opposite way you got into what ever it was you were into.
The model I saw was too weak to consider for hard core use and I eventually put it aside. I don't get off road as much as I used to. If I were I would fabricate a plate to mount a good winch to that was strong and semi easy to move, i.e. handles and a cage and make it so it fit into a standard 2" receiver.
I sure like the looks of that wincher...

Exclamation

I would be VERY careful in your dealings with KMA...they have an attrocious reputation with the Xterra crowd. some of the issues I've seen come up are: poor welds, ill fitting products and in general very slipshod labor and customer service. The few postings I've seen convinced me to shy away from them. If you want more information, try taking a trip to the xterraownersclub.com and searching around for threads using "KMA".

btw: Hydraulic winches weigh a bunch--I think my milemarker that was installed on the Xterra weighed in at 90#. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with an electric, just for the ease of installation. For most things I ran across, I just wasn't making long enough pulls to be concerned with the overheating issues.

hmmm ... so i gain a big black bumper with winch mounting ability, but I lose adequate air flow over the tranny cooler adn oil cooler ... hmmm ... not a good trade of in my opinion. That bumper needs bigger vents for airflow !!!

I would reckon that those guys are creative enough to fabricate a winch bar, they would prolly customize one with adequate ventilation for you (they are "made to order"). Good point, Mike.
