Angry Rock chip

My luck is terrible with this Titan. I've had it for a month and I've already had paint chip off the bumper and now I have a rock chip that has already turned into a crack. It's nothing against the truck, the truck is awesome, it's just my crappy luck. I got in my truck this morning to drive to work and there it was, a foot and a half crack going straight up into my line of vision (of course). I wish they would come up with some technology that would prevent rock chips on windshields.

There is - don't follow behind dump trucks too close.
Actually though I've had them from vehicles on-coming too. If you catch the chip soon enough they can be repaired by glass shops in many cases. Also many glass shops will waive deductibles on windshield replacements.

I heard it hit last night on my way home, but couldn't find anything when I got there and checked. I was actually following a car that was in the other lane. I don't like to follow right behind cars with my new Titan. I was going to look for a chip this morning, but it was too late, the crack was already there. I have heard that windshield shops will quote a higher price to make up for the deductible. I hope their right. Guess I'll have to get the strip of tint put back on it.

Too new for after market. Same thing happened on our 2000 Dodge Caravan, so OEM!

So the local windshield shops won't have a new one to put in my truck? What do I have to do to get one then? I've never done this so I'm not sure how it works.

If they don't they will order one. Just call them up. I was just saying as far as the tint, you don't have to worry because it will be a Nissan part not some aftermarket version.

I think he means he has a strip of tint at the top of his windshielf to block glare/sun light.
Yeah, sucks you will have to have that front windshield retinted once the window is in.

Yeah, the blue strip. It comes on most windshields from the factory, even the aftermarket ones.

I called the Auto Glass Shop today and ordered my new windshield, they said it would be in Tuesday. They also said they would be able to help me with the deductible, have any of you had any experience with this? My deductible is $250 I think. I wonder how much I will have to pay out of my pocket?

As a matter of fact, I just had mine replaced today. Same thing, a chip right in the middle down by the wipers that had turned into a footlong crack by the next day.

Other posters are right, it's too new for aftermarket glass to be available. The replacement should have the blue tint at the top, as well as the screen printed black shading around the edges and mirror.

You might want to ask the shop if they can order the OEM stripping that goes around the edge of the glass as well. It's hard plastic with a little water channel thing in it. The guy that did mine today didn't have the OEM strip, but luckily the generic rubber strip he used looks pretty good. I don't know how it will hold up over the years though.

Oddly enough, i was bummed that i was going to lose my original glass, but the installer pointed out some hand-applied primer around the edges of the old windshield, indicating that it had been replaced by the dealer before i bought it! He said it happens all the time when they get cracked in shipment.

I went through 4 windshields in my '97 Grand Cherokee when they rebuilt I-15 here in Utah several years back. I had a $100 deductible, and the shop waived it each time. I don't think they'd waive a $250 deductible though. You'll probably have to make up part of the difference.

I got a chip yesterday morning on the way to work. On my lunch break, I got it filled. My insurance company pays for it 100%. Every time I've waited longer than 1 day, I've wound up with an unrepairable crack.

Kalani938,

Hey look at it this way... at least it was your windshield, which can be replaced and not your engine hood. On the way in to work yesterday something about the size of a golf ball came bouncing down the interstate in front of me, smacked my hood, then slammed off the windshield. It chipped the paint pretty bad and scuffed up the windshield... no cracks or chips in the glass luckily. Went to get the paint chip repaired today and the guy basically covered it up best he could with paint to prevent rust and help make it less noticable. However, it's still there and unable to be completely repaired unless I have the entire hood repainted. Guess I'll just have to live with it!

Well, I got my windshield replaced today. The shop said they couldn't help me with the deductible because the windshield was a "premium" part ordered straight from Nissan. Oh well, at least it's fixed. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one.
