I've had my titan for ~2 mths. now and I am having my first issues with it. I read all the Differential thread and decided to go change my fluid with my first oil change today @ 3500 miles.
Well I went to a local performance shop and mentioned to the service rep that I wanted to see the rear end fluid before it got dumped. To my and the techs surprise we didn't have to get that far. Once the drain plug was pulled we were shocked. It looks as teeth of the spider gears have been sheered off . I called nissan and set up an appointment this friday to get this looked at. This shouldn't happen with a truck with 3500 miles on it dammit.
Also it seems that my drivers side rear leaf spring is focked, the truck has a slight lean to the drivers side ~1.5" lower. I think this may be the same issue people are having with there "drivers side seat leaning" IT MAY BE THE DAMN TRUCK!!! Go park on level ground and put a level on your tailgate.
I would post pictures of the metal bits that came outta the rear end but my wife has my camera on a cruise. Just giving yall guys a heads up on my issues and I will update it more when nissan tells me something.....
your wifes on a cruise without you? let the parties begin =)
oh yeah, and the part about the truck sucks.

Just curious about your user name- do you have 24" wheels on your truck? If so, I'm wondering if that's putting an additional load on your truck and causing some problems. Just a thought.

I sure hope not. I highly doubt that will have any effect on it. If the truck can tow 9000lbs I doubt 24" wheels will harm it.
Does it makes any noise ?. With a few chunks of spider gears broken off, I would think it'll makes lots of awful noise, does it?.
No noise that I can hear, I do know that the rear end oil was burnt to all hell and back. But we shall see when nissan pulls the rear end and tells me whats up. I've had gear trouble before on other cars but that was mainly just a slight grinding. I just might not beable to hear it. Dunno, I'll keep you guys updated no doubt.
Dino gear oil is very dark and smelly, it probably was not "burnt". It's just probably inadequate to protect it, note that Nissan has started recommending 75w140.

Na the oil was burnt, I work in the petroleum industry and trust me when I say it was burnt. I have no idea why this would have happened but I also have no idea why I would have 1" long chunks of metal floating around the differential.
There are a few type of fluids which has a burning smell (ATF+4 from Mopar and diff fluid with friction modifier added) but it's totally normal, I'm not saying that this's your case but it's kinda strange when you said "few chunks of spider gears floating around" and it does not makes any noise, if you have ONE piece of metal that came off from spider gears, I don't think your be able to drive your truck to your dealer without locking up rear diff.. Let us know what Nissan dealer has found, I'm really interesting on this.

It is easy to tell when ATF is burnt, because it changes colors.
It is impossible to tell if motor or gear oil is burnt. Black color does not indicate used up oil. Only oxidation analysis can say as to whether the oil is burnt or not.
