Question on replacing rear diff fluid

Hi all,
I see many have replaced the rear differential fluid.

1. Does changing it to synthetic or something other than "stock" void the warranty?
2. What do you guys recommend?
3. Have you changed fluids for any other parts of the truck (front diff, transfer case, etc.)?

Thanks,
HS

It doesn't void any warranty. I changed the front and rear diff fluids with Mobil1 75/90 gear oil.
The front can be a bit tricky. Hard to tip the bottle up very high to pour it.

I have the same problem on the rear diff with the spare being in the way. I solved the problem by purchasing a Flow Tool which is a flexible, clear plastic tube that has a screw cap that screws onto the gear oil bottle. You can get the oil to flow against gravity by squeezing the side of the bottle. You will have some oil left over in the bottom but you can easily keep consolidating bottles to make full ones. The Flow Tool is only a few dollars and can be purchased at auto parts stores. It really works good for me.

Bayou, I have a homemade tool you may be interested in. It is a very
large syringe that I added a clear plastic tube to (like the kind you see on
oxygen inhalers). I works very well for adding or removing liquids from hard
to get at places, or to keep from making a mess. I have used it to suck
water back out of a battery after adding too much water.

From everything I've read so far, I think most have changed over to 75w90 for front and rear diff. Those that do a lot of towing use 75w140 in the rear diff and 75w90 in the front.

I currently don't tow, but want to be on the safe side with 75w140... plus from what I hear, it's what Nissan is using in the '05 Titans.

Get one of the pumps that's made to move gear oil into the lower housing of an outboard motor. It's like the kind on a hand lotion bottle, just a little more robust & has a plastic hose attached to the tip. I got mine at Pep Boys - $7.95 I think. Somebody (probably JetTech) posted a picture months ago when the low oil level issue was discovered. These pumps thread right onto gear oil quart bottles. Minimizes (but doesn't eliminate) the mess.

75w140 is not recommended by Nissan for the 2004 Nissan Titan per owners manual. However someone posted the 2005 o/manual where it is the recommended fluid. Now for the warranty thing there's a lot of difference between 90 weight and 140 weight. Hard to explain to the engineer that you thought a fluid would work better when you have to tow your truck in, Kinda like add 80W90 to the crankcase vs the recommended 5W30/10W30 and 10/40 recommended oils. But people will do what ever they thinks right I guess they think there engineers?

Well, since Nissan didn't re-engineer the rear differential and only made a change to 75w140 oil and an aluminum heat dissapating cover, it's kind of obvious that there was a problem and that all '04's should have 75w140 put in the differentials don't you think??

A self-identifed dealer tech said last week on here that Nissan was now recommending the 04's for 75w140 as well.

He could only show the 140 for the 2005, not the 04's still nothing from Nissan on this at all. May have been some small changes to the diff such as tolerances, or bearings.

As I said in another post today, my dealer told me today that Nissan reccomends the 75-140 for my 04. The service manager is a great guy and said that if that is true he is going after a new aluminum cover for me and will install the synthetic oil Nissan recomends. He was calling a Nissan engineer and will call me when he gets the facts. I will post when I hear.

Let us know if you can get a copy of the letter from Nissan and post for us if you can. Thanks

I took mine in today for the 7500 mile check-up, oil change, and to have the brake TSB performed. I asked them if they inspected or changed the fluid in the rear diff. They said, "well, we look at it but if it looks okay then we don't mess with it."

Huh??

I guess changing the fluid is my responsibility and isn't included in the 7500 mile check and service.
