Disgusting Gas Mileage

I leased my titan a month ago and i am so dissapointed with the gas. If I averaged 14 that would be fantastic. I would say I do 50/50 city/highway. When playing real rough my mileage of course is bad, it was 9.75 mpg, but that was reving it real high, going over 100 at times, and just enjoying the power. But then I kept the rpms under or around 2000 rpms for a full tank and only got 10.5 mpg.... thats just horrible, there is no reason for that. I did the air box mod and bought the K&N drop in so if anything it should be getting better mileage should it not? I just can't believe this. I know driving habits have a lot to do with it, but even if i was doing 100% city driving, and driving like an idiot keeping it under 2000rpms the whole time i should get what the sticker says 14mpg... I want to take it to Nissan but i'm wondering if the air box mod will be a problem, considering its a lease and all...

I've gotten on average 11.5mpg but individual mpg has been slowly increasing, but you have to keep in mind. The amt that is stated on the window sticker is an estimate and not what it should actually get. You have to keep in mind with a truck like the Titan, the power, and the fact that it is a V8 it is going to vary. It's a land yacht, so it's gonna get some low gas mileage unfortunately.

And yes, you will probably run into a problem if they see the air box mod...I bet if you took it off, your gas mileage will probably improve a little. I personally see no reason to have one installed, but that's just me.

There has to be something out of wack with your Titans! I only have 880 miles on my Titan and I am almost averaging 16mpg, about 60% highway and 40% city. Plus I take it out of 5th gear and put it into 4th a lot on the highway to help break it in. I am pretty lite on the gas padel, but on average I do a modest take off every 20-30 miles so it hits about 3000 rpm.

Same here! My mileage is pretty damn good (15/16 with mixed driving)...are you sure you are in "D" and not in "4" on the tranny?

city gas milage sucks, but what v8 pickup's better?

around city, in CA, only driving, my 4wd with lower final drive ratio gets 9 to 11 mpg... but what v8 gas full size pickup does better than that?

not a 5.7l v8 hemi dodge 4wd (slower truck)
nor a 5.4l ford fx-150 (slower truck)
nor a 6.0l v8 gmc/chevy 4wd (also slower)...
unless you're driving a 2005 v8 5.3l chevy/gmc hybird 4wd (still slower, but at $8,000~10,000 extra cost)
or a diesel you're not likey to get much better city only milage.

is the 4.7l v8 tundra 4wd getting any better in city gas milage? i doubt it much.

heck, i used to get 8~13 mpg on a 2000 wrangler 4.0: 8~9 mpg in Wyoming & Utah highways in the summer.

loaded up with people and gear my titan does 14~15 on the highways, not bad not bad

I don't know where you are but you also could be using winter gas which does less
MPG than summer gas. Also sorry 300+HP and 5000+lbs is not a good combo for MPG.

I'm gonna post some gas mpg's here for my location in the mountains with my 04 KCSE 4 x4 with big tow-e-loc-lower final gear etc. soon when I get more data....I use the 4 wheel lo and hi range every-day.....I gotta say..I'm not complaing for 305 hp-5,200 lbs and in the mountains..which is brutal...The Titan is doing what I thought it would in the fuel use department.

california has more additives to their fuel so it would decrease mileage overall just a tad.

Altitude and driving habits do a lot to gas MPG.

Prime Conditions:
Sea Level
Zero Extra Weight
Tire PSI 40+
Travel @ 45MPH @ 900RPM = 19+MPG
Car oils, ie tranny, engine, diff

Wouldn't be winter gas doing it to me. Seriously doubt they have it here in Central Texas where we have a pretty tame winter (average 40-50s) with an occasional cold spell. But I do 100% city driving, in "D", so it's sorta expected to me. I have noticed a bit better mileage to each 1/4 tank point (used to be about 70 miles per 1/4 tank but it's been up around 85-90 with the last few tanks). I didn't have much better than this with my Tundra 4.7L V8...maybe a few mpg better than what I have now...best I ever had with that was 18-19 but that was highway driving from SA to Houston and back.

I get around 14-15 and drive pretty fast in most cases. I have a crew 4X4.

Your mileage should improve over time. I have also heard the athe K&N gets worse mileage than the stock filter.

gas mileage

I consistently get 17mpg with my xe 2wd king cab ,"mixed driving". I have 18,000 miles and have used a K&N drop in since 5k.miles.

Yea i don't care if its a V8 or a V18, if it says average 14 the majority of people should be getting close to what the average is, not half getting 10 and half getting 18 to make an average of 14, its ridiculous. We all have the same truck and if we drive the same way it shouldn't be that much different.

BTW, i am in new york... i am not sure what winter gas even is, but i wouldn't know what summer gas would be like since i just got the truck a month ago

does anybody have advice on when i take it to the dealer? Is the stock airbox mod a big deal?

I had the same MPG and found that what the truck needs is to keep the MPG up you need to do 2 things, one is keep the tires aired up on the high side and second is you need to take a long drive every few weeks, maybe an hour or hour and a half of highway driving. Most of my driving (95%) is a 3 mile commute to work and back all surface street and lot's of stops, I'm thinking it is not giving the computer enough data to improve economy. I swear by this when my milage drops off I take a weekend cruise out to the desert and back, less than 200 miles RT and then fill up and for the next few tanks I'm getting 14 - 15 then I see it go to 13 - 12 then 8 - 9 and it stays there.
