35" Spare under truck??

Okay, I have BFG 315/70/17's (35" tire) on stock, 17" offroad rims. This setup fits up under the bottom of the truck in the spare tire wheel well just fine. Didn't even have to air it down.

My question is who out there has changed to aftermarket, 17X9 wheels with 35X12.5X17 tires (or larger) and does this setup also fit up under the truck?

May be a dumb question, but I'm wondering because I'm thinking of getting wider rims. My stock, 7.5" wide rims are awful narrow for 35" tires and I'm afraid of losing a bead when airing down for offroading. Truck is lifted about 6" over stock.

I REALLY want to carry an identical spare (I'd buy 5 new rims and tires) in the factory position and was wondering if any of you had done this?

Regards,

John

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

I also would like to know if a 37'' will fit? By the way John your fine when airing down with the stock rim, it will actually stay on the bead better than with a wider rim. I run 37's on a 17''x 8'' and air down to 10 to 11 psi. I tend to stay 10 psi or above without beadlocks is the general rual.

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

35s will not fit. I don't think even a 33" will.

These are kinda cool..

However depending on how long of a road trip its going to be I usually will throw a spare in the bed. If your 4 wheeling youre gonna want it fastened some how

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

Bigjimbo, can you clarify? The stock tires on a 4X4 are 33's and I have a 35" tire up under the truck in the wheel well now, so clearly they fit!!!!!

My question is who out there has fit 35" or bigger tires up under their truck with AFTERMARKET wheels 17X9 or 17X10.

PJKing, why do you say that tires will stay on better with my stock rims? Not doubting you, I've just never heard this before. My stock rims are 7.5" wide.

Regards,

John

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

My apologies then. I must be thinking if you have dual exhaust tips then. I think thats where the restriction is.

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

Generally with a narrower rim you have more pressure on the bead helping it stay on better, to a dagree. I run 38x1250x15 on my rock crawler on a 15x8 wheel and never really had a problem poping off the bead down to about 8psi. Most with 10'' wheels were blurping air or poping beads alot. I don't worry about it now with trailready beadlocks. I run 4 to 6psi. On my Titan I run 10 to 12psi without beadlocks, as a general rule stay above 10psi without locks. I havn't had a problem with poping a bead yet. The truck has 7200 miles and 2500 of that is offroad aired down.

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

A 35x12.50x17 will fit. I have an aftermarket tow hitch that made it a tight fit but it fit. The part that will not work (for me) is the lift/hold bracket or brace. It is to small for the wheel I was test fitting. I used one of my old wheel a weld 17x8.5 and as soon as I tried to let it down it fell loose. So as long as you can put a bigger lift/hold bracket on you have plenty of room all around except for me with the aftermarket hitch(not sure about stock hitch) for a 35" spare. I also just happened to put the 17's up to my 20's and the 17's seem slightly taller but it could be because of rim width my 20's are 9 or 10.

Re: 35" Spare under truck??

Just get a .250 piece of flat alum to go in between the lift flange and the rim, cures the large hub hole issue.
