Need help, I'm taking the dash apart.....

I just started my rattle investigation and I just took the glove box "door" off and found a drawstring of some kind hanging from a white plastic tube behind the glove box. It has some small square piece of plastic on the end and it's just hanging there. Naturally I pulled on it a few times and it spring returns, but WTF? Anyone know what the hell this is for and why it's just hanging there? Oh, and I found duct tape on the cross frame behind the glovebox too.......along with what looks like some fishing line, I $hit you not. Hmmm, wonder why it rattles?
Any expert advice appreciated.

Hey, I'm open to ideas! The piece on the end looks like it should attach to something. Ah hell, I'll just leave it and ask the service genius next time.

if you take the dash off. You should consider dipping the plastic into a nice rubber or spray on a synthetic material for a nice look. mod perhaps...

Right.. that spring-wound string just lets the glove box open slower when you open it. How da heck did yours come unhooked? Hope it didn't "break" and you can just reattach.
