If you're going to drive at around 45 mph, but not stopping at lights, then "D" will work just fine, but if it's red light, get up to 45, slow down a little, now back up to 45, now red light---stop, and so on, 4th would be better.
I leave it in 4th all the time, except when I get on the freeway.

1 means you will be using only the first gear, 2 means you will be using 1st and 2nd, 3 means you will be using 1st, 2en, and 3rd gear, and so on... so D means you will be using all 5 gears.

So if you are driving around town which never passes the 3rd gear, it will make no differences if you drive in D, 4, or even 3 because you dont even pass that gear.

What's happen to your rpm when you drop it out of OD?. Raises up, right?. More rpm, more mass, lower designed gear range, less (designed/preset) speed = going up hill/more gas and if you're on flat road= goes faster, but it's does not means it's wrong gear, it's means ECU tries to achives(sp?) what the driver wants/input and shifts it to the best gear range for the present road condition for better gas mileage.

so are you saying that if you dont get above, say, 35-45 mph that it will not shift into higher gear when in drive, that it will stay in, say, 3rd gear? is that what your saying? if so, i have a hard time seeing that. ever really listen to it shift gears? it will shift into 4th or even 5th at 35-40 mph.

i, for one, when driving around town, leave it in 4th. it does help out in in-town driving to keep the revs from getting too low. ever punch the gas in D while going 40? it down shifts to at least 3rd, if not 2nd. in 4th it only has to go down 1 maybe 2 gears. maybe to my simple mind that equals less wear and tear on the tranny. who knows?

do what you want. next thing you know somebody is going to say that its not good to get above 60 mph in reverse. yeah right. lol

Below 40-45 mph and in overdrive and hitting the gas sounds like too much tranny slack-take-up to me......my dealer says it works the tranny too....but they only get it right about 50% of the time!!!

I have that tranny slack too. I just dropped my truck off at the dealer for a leaking rear diff and the parts guy said they just replaced a Titan tranny. He said besides that tranny and the radios the Titan seems to be problem free. The tranny thing scares me though!

Does not happen with mine. Leave it in drive. No lugs and no clangs. What's up with your tranny? Have you test driven any other Titans for comparison? Did it do this when you test drove yours before you bought it?

Ok I did a little experimenting on the way home last night. I set the cruse on this nice long flat road at different speeds to see what gear the truck will shift in to.

At 35 MPH the truck will only shift up to 4thand not 5th, This seems to be the cut off speed.

At 40 MPH or above the truck will shift into 5th I could clearly see the RPMs change shifting between 4th and 5th.

So I don’t know any city driving were you don’t even hit 40 MPH (except a traffic jam) so I’ll be keeping my truck in 4th and reserving 5 for the highway. 10 Years form now that will add up to countless less shifts. I can’t prove it will extend the life of my transmission but can’t hurt either not to mention the more responsive feel.

I do believe that running the 88-96 Chevy’s and GMCs in OD did shorten the life because ever person I knew who owned that type of truck and the tranny failed (which is 4 people) around the 80-100k mark kept it in OD for the life of the truck. My 92 and my fathers 96 both had over 110k and 130k on the transmission with no problems what’s so ever. It’s hardly scientific but just a trend I have noticed throughout years. Make of it what you will.

If the ECU sees a steady throttle, no load, temp.., then OD is allowed, other than that no OD, try to touch the brake pedal while your in OD without changing throttle and see how it does.

you know this is slighty related, but I have found that in drive, if i give drive it harder, I get better gas milage. I never really thought why until i read this thread but if I am in OD then I have to give it more gas for it to accelerate..alot more. It will shift if it needs to but I found that if i don't press hard enough then it stays in 5th and I have to hold the gas down for longer than if I just give it enough to shift and shoot to my desired speed. Also when accelerating from a stop, if I slowly give it gas then it seems to work alot harder and longer to get up to speed, instead of giving it a little more gas and getting up to speed faster and letting off. I tried to baby it for 2 fills and got worse gas milage and now I just drive it like I want to and I get like 16mpg or slightly higher. I know.. not the gas milage issue again but keeping it in 4th could actually give you better better milage is situations like mine in atlanta where I slow down and speed up alot. I would try it but I am too lazy to do the little shift lever on my console. O guess on the higher models you can choose to turn off OD, but my only other option is to manually shift.
