overhead console

Anyone with a XE added the overhead console to their pickups? Anyone interested? I was considering it so I can keep openers/sunglasses in it/maybe a radar detector down the line. Those that have it, do you think the factory OEM console is adequate, or would you go aftermarket? Thanks

Personally, I think it's kinda a wast of space unless you have the dvd player etc. the compartments hold a limited amount of stuff. I have them in my SE, and the only one I use is the suglasses compartment.

Don't know for the cost if it would be worth it IMHO...

I think I saw that the OEM overhead console on the '05s has been changed from the '04 version. The Homelink, compass and temperature are on the console now instead of the rearview mirror.

If you are going to do it, you might want to do it now with the '04 console because the wires for all the extra stuff might not be there to hook everything up and you'd be left with a blank display. Just a thought.

Oh, and I only use the sunglass compartment so far too. But I've been waiting for a replacement since my original was cracked from the factory, so I didn't want to fill it up with stuff only to have to take it back out. And everyone comments on how they like all the storage compartments when admiring the truck.

Does anyone know what the space looks like under their existing overhead consule? Did nissan cut away the head liner for the console to mount to the ceiling? What does the console mount to? I just have a plain flat headliner in my XE.

Had to go out to the parking lot and take a quick look-see to figure out if you could add the console to your XE. It looks to me like they cut away the headliner and most of the storage space would be between your headliner and the roof. At least four of the screws mount through the top of the console into two metal strips running front to back above the headliner. I don't know if that metal is part of the console or if it is just hidden by your headliner. Also don't know how the metal strips are attached to anything else. Those metal mounting strips can only be seen through one of the compartments near the rear of the console, so I'm not sure how it's mounted closer to the windshield where the maplights are. Reaching up past the metal strips I can feel the outside sheet metal of the roof.

When I get my new console I'll ask for the old cracked one. If the metal strips are included with the old console, I'll send the old console to you. If no metal strips, I wouldn't go cutting open your headliner without knowing for sure if they are up there or not.

I don't know if this helps, but it couldn't hurt.

Most likely, the dealer won't give you the defective part.

I also noticed my SE headliner does come down in the middle to make extra storage space for the console. If your headliner is flat all the way across, I'm not sure you could add the console without more work than it's worth. I'll still let you know if the dealer gives me the old console.

I only use the sunglass compartment and everything else holds nothing really.

The OEM compartments tend to shake violently when off-roading and when tire PSI is 40+. The majority of my noise come from those places and its annoying at times.

Aftermarket?

Clint was right. Dropped off the truck this morning to have the overhead console replaced. Asked him if I could have the old one and the service manager said they had to turn it into Nissan for warranty purposes. WazzuCoug, send me a PM so I know you read this and aren't expecting me to send it to you. I can take some pictures and send them to you if it would help with planning your project though.
