Oil analysis on 2004 Titan factory fill, 999 miles

For your viewing pleasure..

Sample taken 11/26/04, oil changed. Build date was 9/22/04, so the oil was in the engine a little longer than 2 months. Truck had only 7 miles on it when I test drove on 10/22/04.

Analysis performed by Holt Catepillar SOS service in San Antonio.

Wear Metals
Iron 14
Lead 7
Aluminum 6
Chromium 1
Copper 21
Tin 4

Additive Package
Moly 1
Magnesium 11
Phosphorus 924
Calcium 2021
Zinc 1046
Total Base Number (TBN): 7.0

Contamination
Silicon 110
Potassium 0
Sodium 3
Oxidation 0%
Nitration 19%
Sulfation 0%
Water negative
Antifreeze negative
Fuel negative

Viscosity @100 celcius: 9.3, thin 30wt

My thoughts: Wear metals are very, very low for an engine breaking in. I have never seen an analysis report with 0% oxidation, no wonder the oil still looked like honey coming out. The elevated silicon is probably leaching from the seals and does not indicate an air leak. This oil either is very thin to start with or has sheared, either way this is almost down a 20wt oil.

Bottom line: Other than the elevated silicon (seals) and the very thin viscosity of the oil (may be by design), this fill really didn't need to be changed.

I just did my first oil change at 2k miles and the oil still looked new. I was amazed. My next change I think I would like to have this test done. How would I go about finding a place to do this test and what should I expect to pay? Thanks.

My oil analysis was done through Terry Dyson for $35. Terry is an old racer who is an expert at "reading" used motor oil. I highly recommend him. He accepts PayPal and will mail you a kit which you'll get in a few days. The analysis takes from 4 days to 2 weeks depending on backlog.

Thanks for the info. I will probably just follow the maintenence guide on my changes. I think the first scheduled change is at 4500 miles. Since I don't normally tow anything that should be ok.

First change is at 3750 by the owner's manual.
