Service Engine Soon Light

2004 Titan with 5800 miles.

have any of you had a problem with your SES light coming on? Mine came on and I brought my truck to the shop. They said it was a code suggesting the gas cap was loose. They reset the light and made sure my gas cap was tight. I filled up with gas on the way home and tightened gas cap well. Four days later the light came back on. Brought back to shop, it was giving the same code. This time they said it was a fuel vapor leak code. They said they "smoked" the system to look for vapor leaks. Found a possible leak with a vapor canister. This supposedly filters fuel vapors leaving the system. They ordered the vapor canister and a valve that attaches to the canister. They told me I could pick up my truck, driving it in this condition would be no problem. The parts have been on order for a week and a half, the valve came in but the canister is still on order. Currently the light is back on again.

Has this fuel vapor system problem happened to anyone out there?

From my exteinsive SES light experiences on both a former Nissan and a former Pontiac, I can say the the SES light is a kinda catch all light for just about anything. But most of the time it IS triggered by some sorta EPA related stuff, like loose gas caps and vapors and what not. Newer vehicles are closely monitored for emissions and the least anominaly can set em off. On my Pontiac, it turned out to be a seal around the gas tank where the fuel hose ( used to pump gas into the tank from the gas station pump) was slightly split when the tank was installed allowing vapors to escape.

For a hundred dollars you can get a obd II code reader that plugs into a port under your dash that will allow you to read and clear codes that are produced.I've even seen them at Walmart.Easy to use no mechanical skills needed and it will save you lots of trips to the dealer for a loose gas cap.(Most auto parts stores will also read and clear the code for free)

If you have a friendly relationship with a local mechanic, ask him to check and reset it. Mine did it for free.

AutoZone will check the SES/CEL light with a reader for free but they will not reset it.
Just an FYI if you are looking for a free-bee.

However, since 95%+ of our trucks are still under warranty, tighten the gas cap first, if that doesn't stop it from coming on...take it to the dealer.

I posted the below thread last summer
Read and Reset the Service Engine Soon (SES) light
The Titan has a code reader built-in.

I agree with treebasher. My truck only has 5800 miles on it. I think it is unacceptable to have to go to autozone or anywhere else to have the light turned off. It will only come back on in a day or so. I want the problem fixed. Hopefully when the parts on order come in, the problem will be solved.
