Unhappy 7.5 MPG Is this normal?

Help me out here folks? I just bought a 04 Ttian 4x4 LE with 5300 miles, loaded, crew cab which is a very sweet truck but this thing drinks fuel like a Irishman on a holiday. Is this normal? I put duel exhaust on it thinking it would help the situation and it still sucks it down. The best I've gotton so far is 11.4 miles to the gallon.
What should I expect? I took it to the dealer and they checked it over and told me that everything is as it should be.. Heck the low is supposed to be 13 with a 4x4 and 18 as a high. Being in Northern CA where gas is 2 bucks a gallon this is not acceptable. Any suggestions on how to improve it or what to do? I drive alot and my gas bill will triple with this truck..

Thanks,

I get around 15 mpg, half interstate half country roads. My truck has 17,000 miles on it.
Your mileage will depend on your driving habits.

I am in the same boat. I have 1800 miles on a 4X4 CC LE without big tow or off road. I thought getting this model would be better because of the higher final gear. I am getting 7 - 11 MPG. If it doesnt change in the next couple months the truck is going up for sale

I don't care what your dealers are telling you , you've got a problem. granted mines not 4x4 but i get consistentsly 17.5 mpg on the highway running 80 mph and i do have a love of punching it once in a while.

I agree - theres a problem - my 2004 King consistently gets 14.1-15.3 depending around town and 17-18 on the highway all day long. I just got back from Newport News traveling north on Rt13 Maryland onto the NJ Turnpike and 95 to MA. I averaged around 70-75 mph the whole way and charted my consumption. I averaged 17.3 mpg all the way back except for NYC where there were multiple accidents and I crawled for 2 hours resulting in 14.4mpg. If I wanted 7.5 I'd get my V10 F350 back - oh wait! it got better mileage than that (well not much better, 9.5 around town/11-12 on the highway)

I would say there is a problem, but it might have to do with your tire pressue. Mine were 10 psi too low and on a big truck like this, result in 2-3 mpg decrease.

I tend to get 10-11 mpg pure city (only 3 miles from work w/5-10 stop lights in between = terrible mpg), 13-14 mpg with a mix of highway driving, and probably 17-18 mpg highway (have yet to go pure highway).

No that's not normal. You can try to disconnect the negative side of the battery for around 18-24hrs and see it the computer will will relearn differently. If not some how you need the dealer to admit that you have a problem. If there's a different dealer around you try them.

I drive all city, and the best I have gotten is 12.1 when it was new, then around 11.8 and now last tank was 12.0 This is over 3400 miles. If your city miles are alot of stop and go like mine then your about where I am. Some of these guys don't know what true city type driving is. I would easily expect 15 on the highway at 70 but I drive more like 80 so who knows....someday i will do a highway trip. I use this truck for work in town mostly.

Gas mileage depends on weight of vehicle, and weight of foot.

If you drive a 5000 pound truck like a 3000 pound sports car, you're going to get crappy gas mileage. Besides.. if you're so worried about the cost of fuel... why did you buy something that gets gov.-estimated (NEVER accurate) 13mpg??

I drive 100% city and my last tank finally got 13mpg. I have 5000 miles and live 1/4 mile from work. The furthest driving I do is 20 miles round trip going to see my dad, but that's still city driving. What I would suggest is watch where your trip mileage is at on 1/4 tank intervals. I usually hit around 70 miles per 1/4 tank, so I end up around 270-280 per fillup. But if you are only getting 7 mpg, there is definately a problem. My gas mileage was around 11 when I first got it in late June, but has consistently gotten better. Push the dealer that other Titan owners are easily getting atleast 11-12 mpg and higher and that 7 seems VERY VERY low. If they won't budge, goto another dealer.

I bought the truck because I think that it is one of the best built full size trucks out there. At the same time I did expect at least 13 miles to the gallon, not half of that. I don't drive with a heavy foot, I have a 66 Chevelle for that..

VZE, wow, your getting excellent gas mileage... what mods have you done to the motor to make this happen? I'm open for suggestions as to how to make this improve.. $90.00 a week for gas is a bit much.

I think I will try another dealer and see what they have to say..

Thanks folks..

1st Tank = 9mpg
2nd Tank =14mpg

maybe a Volant or K&N CAI would help? I am contemplating this...

I have gotten 14.5, 15.25, 15.22, 14.9.

I'm positive the last tank was lower because I am over the manual specified 1200 mile break in now and I have been putting the hammer down MUCH more often
