Truxedo & bed extender mod my way

Well I did not like having to remove the bolts, clamps, and then slide out the extender brackets just to flip the sucker over either. I did not like only having sheet metal screws holding it on for strength reasons. So I cut the brackets, and extended them just enough so the extender would clear the truxedo rails. (I cut some flat stock and welded the brackets up, and spray painted them flat black.) Then pushed the extender together a bit more. It is just 3 pipes that slide together. They are easy enough to cut if need be.
Now I use the OEM truxedo rail clamps and bolts. I mounted the extender brackets so they just clear the tailgate and use the extender as it was intended.

I will try and post some pictures below. If not PM me and I can mail you some snaps.

If you would like me to fix your brackets....all I ask is that you pay shipping and cost of materials.

Thank you for the post Iceman. I did this fix just yesterday and it works like a charm. I have to get some drywall tomorrow so that will be the ultimate test but I'm happy to have my tailgate extender back.

Not sure you will have 8 feet even with the extender... Glad it worked out!

I only had a couple pieces of drywall to get so they did not rise above the first tube of the extender so no problems whatsoever. It is not something I do daily so it will not be an issue. I'm just happy to have the flexibility back that I once had.

I have the same setup and I put the last bracket for the truxedo (closest to the tailgate) before the bed extender. That way I can slide the extender out about 6 inches, flip it, and slide it back in. Not a big deal because I don't flip it that often. I like your fix, do you know how much you added to the bracket?

Hate to resurrect such and old thread, but I just got my sliding bed extender off of Ebay and was trying to do a version of your mod (I was going to use 1x2 aluminum square tubing and longer screws to "shim" the bracket out - instead of cutting it). However, I couldn't get the 3 tubes to slide to "shrink" the width of the bed extender by 4 inches. I had thought I read somewhere there were screws that I would need to loosen on the extender tubes but didn't see them.

Can anyone help with either pics or a detailed explaination on how it to reduce the widht of the bed extender without cutting it?

Thanks,

George

Santa is bring me a Truxedo Lo Profile cover, and I would like to have the brackets ready with this modification. If you have done this, will you tell me exactly how much you need to extend each bracket inward so that the bed extender would just clear the Truxedo rails? Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Masa

Re: Truxedo & bed extender mod my way

Please excuse the bluriness of the photos, low light in the garage.

The first photo is the placement of the screws, they are on the inside of the two black pieces in the center of the rail. The arrows indicate the screws, 6 total (3 each black piece).

The second photo is a tape mesure next to the modified bracket. Should be self explanatory. If you cannot pick up on where the welds are then it is 2-3/8" to 2 1/2" extension required.

Hope this helps!

Re: Truxedo & bed extender mod my way

THANK YOU so much Troutspinner. I'm sorry for my slow reply. I didn't even notice your post... I'll try to get this mod done before Santa arrives By the way, when I called Truckmod.com to order my Truxedo, Lo-Profile cover, I was told that it has been redesigned so that It can be installed on Titans with or without the Utili-Tracks. Thanks again Troutspinner!!
