Post How to calculate gas milage

I think this where alot of people are going wrong when they say that they get below 14mpg unless they are towing. When calculating your milage you should fill up your tank and set your trip tachometer. Drive it until you want more gas and the see how much it takes to fill it up. For instance I usually go 370 miles and it takes 22.2 gallons to fill it back up therefore you take 370/22.2=16.6mpg. I realize this is probably commen sense to most but I came across this issue in a post a while ago where someone would take the the 370 miles divided by the full tank capacity of 28 gallons which would be 13.2 mpg. Unless you drive untill you run out of gas and your truck stops then it doesn't take that much to fill it up. The light on my titan comes on after using like 21 gallons of gas. Anyway I hope this helps at least one person out there b/c I love my titan and want everyone here to love theirs as well.

Cool

Keep smoking......in the morning???????lol It's a mileage odometer not tachometer.....and don't gorget the 4% odometer error....add 4% to your miles for total miles....we posted this a while back..check your odometer so your calculations are correct before you state the mpg's.!!

to get a fair reading, you must get the air out of the tank, then you must fill it up to where the fuel in the tube is visible to the eye, this is somewhat time consuming, but it works. now drive your desired miles, and refill the tank to the same level as before. divide number of miles driven, by gallons used.

So how do us infortunate ones check mileage when we can't get a full tank of gas due to the annoying fuel filling problem. My Titan repeatedly will only get about 3/4 to 7/8 tank before the auto shutoff trips on the pump. If I try to top off it shoots gas out. It's different every time too. Sometimes I can get more in then other times. Running on fumes the most I've been able to get in the tank is 22 gallons.

is the odomter margin of error +/- 4% or is does it just always show 4% less than how far you've really traveled. If it was a constant -4% I think Nissan would have corrected it by now.

I calculated mine with hiway mileage markers.....forr 100 miles it said 96 miles.....I tried it every 10 miles....and even after they reset the computer.....so for me the odometer says 4% less than actual miles. I asked NISSAN about it.they said they allow up to a 6% error.but did not say which way or if that meant 3% above to below actual...never got a straight answer from them or their engineers....and I will keep asking them. I agree that they should fix this...although it is minor compared to all other issues on my Titan....just shows NISSAN is not into accuracy on systems on Titans..which scares me.

I have never seen 250miles out of mine tank. I drive it auntil the light comes on, which I know is early, but it still should matter. Yes I know how to calsulate my mph, and it still sucks. I didn't buy a honda civic you know. I was ready for this.

Highway markers are 'approximately' placed and are not accurate unless it is marked 'measured mile' by the state highway dept. I had my Titan and a few friend's Titans both checked on radar and using a mileage meter (the big accurate bicycle wheel that hooks to the rear bumper) as a test. the speedometer is right on at 45, 50, 60 and 65 and the odometer(s) are within a few feet of being dead on.

I don't doubt that some of your vehicles may have a problem, but using accurate methods, the 4 I have tested are all correct. All 4 where 04 models built after June 04 and all where 4wd CC with tow packages.

How many gallons did it take to fill your tank after going 280 miles? Was it 22 gallons? Were you towing anything? I get bad milage when towing, but ok milage otherwise 16mpg normally in all city driving (atlanta), and 18 to 19mpg interstate to florida flat land.

the most I have ever put in is 23 gallons but it's not a problem. I have never run it till it ran out of gas before. If you run it until you run out of gas then you should be able to get ~28 gallons. the light comes on after using like 21 gallons of gas so you should be able to run it another ~100 miles after the light comes on with 7 gallons left depending on gas milage.I also had this happen at this one particular pump where gas would shoot out before I could finish filling but it was only if I go back to that one pump. Even other pumps at the same gas station were ok but that one would do it every time. weird.

Am I wrong on this? I thought the manual states the gas tank capacity at 26 gallons. I have seen this in a few places on here and I am pretty confident in filling up my Titan that is correct at 26 gallons.

Also, I think most people are relying on their gas gauge which has been proven to be inaccurate and in need of having the sending unit replaced. In some cases the float actually has gotten stuck, too. I know my sending unit is off but knowing that 25 gallons times 14 mpg is 350 miles works to a nice round number leaving an extra gallon of gas to be the fudge factor I usually fill up by 275 miles leaving about 1/4 of a tank to go. The E light usually kicks on before then. If I go by just the E light I usually have 4-6 gallons of fuel left.

BTW, Truck41 if you continually top off your tank and not remove the pump handle when it kicks off from auto fill, the sending unit will definitely lose any semblence of accuracy.

I haven't noticed any inaccuracy in my odometer like Tom_Mincarelli has. Anyone else notice this?

logic you are rounding quite a bit to come up with that number. I regularly go 370 miles on a fill up unless traffic is REALLY bad, and use about 22 gallons to fill it back up. I could be wrong about the max capacity of the tank though, could be 26 gal? I am not relying on the E light I am relying on the odometer (sorry about saying tachometer before I fill it up and set my trip odometer and divide the number of miles traveled by the number of gallons it takes to fill it back up. I don't really mess with the % error of the odometer b/c this is not an exact science, and you will not be exactly right no matter what you do, and I just don't care that much. I was just trying to help anyone who may have been calculating wrong by my original post, b/c the only thing that is bad about the titan is the gas milage but at 16mpg it's not bad for 305hp V8. At least we don't get the worst of all like the hemi.

In some places you will notice "odometer checks" where they have mile markers starting at "0" (begin check) and then go on for a few miles before the "end check" sign is posted.

Did you use these for your odometer check Tom?

Personal editorial alert:

It seems that some people "jump" on everything negative that they see because they have had some problems with their Titan. Some problems I consider real issues, like brake judder, rear differential, etc. that require TSB's. Then there are those that I consider "peeves", like radio/tachometer window reflection, rusty drive shafts, etc. that I didn't even notice and wouldn't care about anyway.

But that's just how it seems to me maybe because my Titan has been trouble free and my patience hasn't been tried like some of you all.

Oh yeah, mine's a very early build date (11/03) and had its one year of ownership celibrated on 12/14/04.
