just wondering the reason nissan went with 75w140on the 05's. seems pretty thick especially in 10 degree weather. 75w140 is what we use in our coal trucks which have 60000 lb rear ends.

the oil recomended is a synthetic...which most synthetics flow great even at temps lower then 10 degs.

So, is that a synthetic? I hope so because I don't want to have to change my fluid when my truck finally arrives.
The 05's should come with synthetic 75-140w, you will be ready to go, and as a bone-a$$ you just might get a finned aluminum rear end cover

Anybody with a '04' put 75w-140 gear oil in yet? I know it is in the '05's. Is the finned diff. cover the only difference between the '04' and '05'? Should we be using the '05' gear oil?

Keep in mind that the first number is the "winter" number. 75w-140 and 75w-90 both maintain the same kinematic viscosity of 75 weight gear lube in cold weather. The 140 rating is the gear lube's kinematic viscosity at high temperatures.
I'll be putting 75w-140 in my Titan after I finish breaking it in. I'm going to use Amsoil gear lube and oil when the time comes.
I have an appointment tonight to get my rear diff. changed. It only has 1600 miles on it and it should have the 75W140 in it. I will try and take some pictures of the oil that comes out and post them tonight.

I've heard of no changes between the '04 and '05 rear diff other than the cover... so one would think the '04 should also be using 75w-140. I changed mine out to 75w-140 about 2 weeks ago and haven't had any problems. The original fluid was very dark, had a horrible burned smell, and the drain plug was covered with a thick sludge... glad I changed it!

At the dealership yesterday and some of the early 05 don't have the aluminum
diff cover.

The winter number is not kinematic viscosity, it's in cP (centistrokes) at a given temperature. I don't know what that temp is offhand without looking, but it is certainly within a range and varies somewhat.

dark gear oil-normal due to ep, moly adds.
smells burnt-normal, due to ep and sulfur adds
sludge on drain plug-it was moly assembly lube on mine. Used when assembling bearings, fell down to the bottom after a few miles.

it is expensive but it supposed to be the best. We use it in power plant cooling towers where the gear boxes are operating on a 24 / 7 cycle.
Do you use the 203 or the 212 in your Titan?
