ok to downshift?

hey everyone, i have the gated shifter in my titan, i was wondering if it was safe to downshift the transmission from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd etc... when going down hills or on level ground, does the titan do any sort of rev matching to minimize wear and tear on the transmission, thanks

Merry Christmas to everyone!

I wouldn't use the shifter like this all of the time but occassionally sure it's fine. No rev matching though. It's just your typical auto.

I have the gated shifter, and I occasionally use the shifter to downshift as I'm coming up on redlights, but my use is constrained to (usually) when I'm driving at about 45-50mph coming up to a redlight (and I've got lot's of distance left). I'll pop it from drive down to 3. I live in Florida--- all flat driving. Usually as I let off my gas pedal in my situation, I feel the trans do it's auto shift to 4, so when I pop it from D to 4, there's no difference. so I chop it to 3, and I get a exhaust-brake effect to slow it down a bit more. then I apply the brakes.

I guess it's my way of saving myself from the rotor warping!!! I've just gone in for the brake TSB last week for the first time, at 8200 Miles. If the trans can't take it, then hopefully it'll blow up at about 35000miles, but my downshifting tendency doesn't tend to add too much hard rpms to the trans.

My theory on this is that brakes are a lot cheaper than a transmission. Just my $.02

Yo....of course I will tell the truth about my Titan......but mine isn't the only one.......it is a dark NISSAN secret......about to popout.....yes I found out while using the gear ranges that something is very wrong with the 3rd to 3nd range..at about 22 mph....BAM_SHUDDER....others with it will be in for a surprise when they try to trade-in or sell if it is not fixed. I have the column thumb shifter so shifting is very SWEET for me as opposed to the floor shifts others have.
Those that say brakes are cheaper than transmissions should not whine about the dust and judder they have........if you can't downshift from 3rd to 2nd from 20-25 mph than something is wrong.NISSAN admits this..and also admits they can't fix it....or replace my truck....I have two sweet words to say to NISSAN...F***Y**!!!!!! and anybody else that sticks up for the crappy transmission, brake and differential problems.....not to mention all the other problems from the BEAST!! Now thank-you for allowing me to show how I feel about my G**D*** Titan!
How much stock do you have in NISSAN?????????

Pretty harsh words for the Titan, but Tom you said on one of your post you had ordered an 2005. If I was that put out I don't believe I'd buy another. Anyway was at the service dept today (imagine that) and they to received a letter from Nissan admitting brake problems and that they are working on a fix so hang in there, my service managers brakes have been replaced four times. Back to Tom M., hang in there buddy just keep downshifting and your problem will take care of itself when the tranny goes by-by, and it will, then maybe your problems will be over with a new tranny.

Actually I lived on the Outer Banks for 13 years. at 4' above sea-level...now 5 years in the mountains at 3,224' alt.....I'm no expert...but I know when something is broken or out of spec.........and my 6 year old T100 never had problems like my 1 week old Titan.now over 2 months and about 4,400 miles. So what is your point Squid?????
I appreciate the info. shared on this site......and half praise and half hate my Titan........just like most others here....according to what I read.
What's your version of the tranny problem?????????????????

Tytain...I have the option to go 3 ways...Fix-05-Toyota....the way I see it...which is better than just one option!!
Sorry to sound so harsh on NISSAN.....it is the corp.....not the Truck-Titan......don't get me wrong......I like the design..but the refinement is not there......just my own experience. And NISSAN has not come up to the plate with responsibility with what they design make and sell to the public.
I hate being stranded but have to say my experience with NISSAN at this point in time. I do believe the Titan is a wonderful design.......that's why I ordered an 05. And no I haven't tried the new Tundra yet...so what's that tell you??????

The point Tom, is that you have a downshift issue that I can't reproduce. So rather than taking the position that your a whiner I choose to believe that your driving in the hills of North Carolina may be the difference.

The person asked about downshifting, so I figured you would be a good person to respond.RELAX!

OK Squid.........sorry I had a bad NISSAN day....but the tranny issue is a pain when it does it in 2 wheel , 4 wheel low and high......so I hear or feel it many times a day....If i lived where it were flat..I could leave in drive and keep it in drive and I would never know of the shudder. So it is very annoying.....daily......if I could fix it myself I would have some time ago!!! Wonder if I'll be the first BETA tester for the FIX!!!!!lol
Squid...I'm glad you don't have the tranny shudder either!!
Happy Holidays all......hope your Titans are purring.!

I would recommend downshifting all you want, I think the added ware on the transmission would be negligible.

Especially on long downhill descents and any real 4 wheeling downshifting is a must IMHO.

I think since it’s all computer controlled you could put it into 1st at 90 and I don’t think the computer would let it happen until the truck slowed down to a predetermined fastest speed for that gear. I haven’t tested it to prove it yet but that’s that way my 92 GMC was and I can’t imagine my 04 titan wouldn’t have the same safety features.
