You may have something on the colder air thing. Colder air is denser, so yes drag would be more. And colder air would cause the intake mass air flow sensor to sense colder, denser air, so maybe it's telling the computer to pump more fuel to match the mass of the air flow. Which would explain the lower gas mileage, and probably better performance in acceleration. I know my Titan feels stronger when it gets cold outside. Kind of like having an intercooler, only it's an OUTERcooler. ha!
