Truck Bed Question

I was looking under my truck bed and it looks like the body pannels have some type of insulated to keep noise down. The material looked almost like a paper with glue. Has anyone figured out why they insulted it other than to keep noise down. Will this rust out and is it paper? Please help. I Can't be the first person to notice this?

Is this the spray on rubberized undercoating? I think noise suppression as well as reducing stone chip damage are factors for use.

Update

Take a look under your truck. I noticed it on the inside of the rear quarter panels. I have a Blue truck its clearly brown. It looks like its pre cut and glued into place. I noticed it when I was changing my rear differential fluid. It looks like you could chip it off with a knife. I will take a picture with my digital camera and post on-line. Sorry about the spelling. Can't type today....Must be getting old.

It is actually there to add strength to the body panels. It's also on the front fenders.
