question about tax, title, and license..

What does this include? Obviously, I know the tax part, but why am I paying the dealer for title and license? The dealer wants $399 for this service. Is it just another way for the dealer to make more $$? Can someone explain this to me? Thanks.

You are paying for your state title services and your first year of state registration. If you do happen to pay to much for your registration you will (or should) get a check back in the mail from the dealer. There is nothing shady about it on the dealers end.

check with your local tax assessor/collector office and they should be able to tell you what the initial cost of title and registration is. In Texas the county you purchase your vehicle in collects funds for title and registration, even though it is administered through TxDOT. Keep in mind there are application fees and so on that may dictate why the cost is so high.

My breakdown was this, on the receipt from the tax collector for the title application/registration/vehicle tax. You should probably get a receipt when you get your plates (atleast its something that is given in Texas when a vehicle purchase is made)

$597.25 tax
$51.38 total reg/transfer fee
$33.00 title application fee
$11.50 local fees (in texas road/bridge fee)

probably a little different in other states, but atleast a general idea.

What it sounds like you are describing is the dealer's "Administrative Fee" ...

This is a B/S charge that just about all of them tack on ... they say it is processing/maintaining your records etc ....

Vehicle Taxes are published ... they are 3% in my state ....

I don't expect that your title is over $60 ... or that your tag is over $60 ...

The "Administrative Charge" is just ADP ... (Additional Dealer Profit)

Bill_n,

This sounds like what I am talking about. It sounds like another dealer b/s charge. Thanks.

Thumbs up Admin. fee...try haggling!!

With my discount and $2K rebate I figured I was still ahead.....another Nissan dealership charges $199.......I'll check the breakdown today.......I remember when it was $75 for the admin fee..and sometimes telling my dealer I would not pay.......about 20 years ago that was! lol...yeah they say it is for the office people and so-on.

Procurement/Filing Fee (too high-another dealer was $199) $297.00
N.C.S.I. FEE $009.10
Sales Tax $861.00
New License Plate and Title $57.50

I think it is negotiable if it means a sale....so why don't you haggle with them and let us know how that goes??!!!
Good luck enos...TOM

They also have that lovely document fee, too. And I didn't get a happy ending w/ my Titan. Did anybody get one? I thought it was part of the Popular pkg.

In Illinois you can re-class your license plates if you go from a passenger vehicle to a truck or vice versa or etc. I had 6mos left on my pass. plates and paid the full $143 for truck plates on my Titan when I could have paid $14 to re-class my plates to truck plates.

I recommend doing you tax, title, registration separate if at all possible. Tell the dealer you will handle this outside of your vehicle purchase. They should have some kind of release document that you can sign that will keep you from holding them responsible and put the responsibility solely on your shoulders. Now, not everyone will be able to pay their tax, title, license out of pocket but it saves them some paper work and you probably can save yourself some loot in the process.

Wow! you guys are lucky. Your states don't punish you for buying a new truck.
sales tax-$2413
license-$417
REG-$5
That is nearly $3k in fees for buying a truck and having the privledge of living in the most liberal money grubbing state in the union.

my dealer did the title and licence also for my truck. this is the first time i've encountered it. they guy said it was part of the nissan lease that they take care of it. there were no charges to me from the dealer. i simply paid them instead of paying the bureau of motor vehicles. my registration and receipt came in the mail as well as a check for what i had overpaid the dealer (we estimated what the plates would cost for the rest of the year).

Im looking at 3 grand in tax, title, registration etc over here in AZ. I wish I only had to pay 900 in tax.

I think it all depends on a trade. If I were to try and buy the truck in NY w/out a trade I would pay price * 8%. However if the truck is $24k and my trade goes for $14k, then I only pay tax on the difference $10k ~ $800.

I guess they figure you have already paid tax on the car your trading in...
