Remote Start

Anyone have any info on a remote start vehicle system that can be "started" with a cell phone? A guy I know stated that he had this type of setup installed on his Aviator. That, if he wanted to, could start his vehicle by using his cell phone from just about anywhere. If true, how much do these cost over and above the normal systems?

Yes ...

By integrating one of the Viper Alarms (I have the 791XV) with the Viper GPS Tracking system .... you can do ANYTHING from ANY phone or ANY internet connection ... ANYWHERE in the WORLD ... that you can do from your alarm keybob ....

I can start mine from China ...

But ... why would I want to ??

If you put one on a Yugo it would add new meaning to the phrase "starting some S**t"

Hey Bill_n do you have some more info on the viper alarm with GPS thing? I am looking to get an alarm in the next few weeks. If you don't mind my asking what did you pay for your viper alarm system?

Erik

here is the info, http://directed.com/security/viper/gps.asp

you have to purchase plans based on the number of uses, probably on top of the cost of the unit and install. not cheap to have the ability to play around with the car; also not sure when this could bail you out of trouble.

Sure ...

I don't mind ....

Ordinarily ... I would have put this in myself ... but since it's a company vehicle ... and the IRS was just gonna take the money anyway ....

The alarm/remote start ... Viper 791XV ... was $250 from the dealer ... (It can be bought on Ebay for about $180)

Transponder bypass module ... for remote start ... was another $25 ....

$125 labor for installation of the alarm ....

$75 labor for installation of the remote start ....

The GPS Tracking System was $550 ...

And another $100 for installing that ....

And ... as far as the GPS Tracking Service plans go ...

Basic ... free the first year ... $49/year ... all you get is stolen vehicle recovery services ...

Next Level ... I forget what they call it ... is $89/year ... you get 30 uses of their system plus some "Auto Club" type benefits ... real time tracking ... ignition control ... door unlocking ... etc...

Top Level is $115/year ... same as above except ... you get 150 uses ...

Remote Start

Thanks Bill. Sounds like a lot of this GPS stuff correlates with what GM's Onstar system accomplishes. Like UNLOCKING doors and locating stolen vehicles. I wonder WHY GM hasn't incorporated this remote start stuff into it's Onstar system? Where as, one can UNLOCK and START their vehicle from remote, very remote, distances? My wife is a pilot and would like a sytem, like the one you desrcibed, to remote start (from the terminals) her NEW Murano. Maybe now she can have one. AS LONG AS SHE PAYS FOR IT.

Here in New Jersey they have been getting ticket happy for leaving an unattended vehicle running. If you were to use a longer distance dial up start and weren't anywhere even close(home,office) I'm sure you'd pay for that too. Most people are close by but want to heat or cool a few minutes head start.

If she is really good maybe she could start it from the plane

I know, not helpful. Good luck.

I do that all the time .... as part of my pre-landing checklist ...

I just turned my "GUMP" check into a "GUMPS" check ....

G = Gas ... Fuel on Proper Tank - Electric Fuel Pump On
U = Undercarriage ... Down - Locked - 3 Green Lights For Landing
M = Mixture ... Full Rich
P = Prop - Set High for Emergency Climbout
S = Start the Truck - So I won't be freezing my A$$ off ...

These things have got a helluva range on them ....

And there is two-way communication between the remote and the vehicle ... so you know when the vehicle has received the "message" ....
