A stupid question, but please advise

I have been using 87 octane since I purchased my truck. The manual states that I should research 91 octane, but have been unable to find any info in the manual. Should I use 91? Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thank you

I've been using 87, funny that the manual wants you to research gasoline...

Use 87 it's cheaper.

Next time you go to the gas station take a close look at the octane label, I believe it lists a research octane also which is a little higher. I think 87 octane is actually 91 or 92 research octane. I have no idea what it means though.

I don't know unless they are somehow referring to RON (Research Octane Number).

Yes they do use RON there were several earlier threads on this. 91 RON equates to about 87 octane as on most US pumps. I do not know why they insist of confusing us simple folk.

Google is a wonderfull tool.

Most people are familiar with gasoline octane number. It's the number that you refer to when selecting the grade of gasoline to use in your car. The number may be 87 or 89. The vehicle manufacturer recommends a certain type of fuel to be used. In most cars this is 87 octane unleaded gasoline. This octane rating is actually the average of two tests that are run on the finished gasoline - the Research Octane and the Motor Octane. The average is the Road Octane or (R+M)/2 which is posted on the pump. Some of you may remember when gasoline was sold with a Research number. The difference between Research and Motor Octane is around eight with Research being higher.

Acording to the manual "Octane rating tips
In most parts of North America, you should use
unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at
least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number. However,
you may use unleaded gasoline with an
octane rating as low as 85 AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
number in high altitude areas [over 4,000 ft
(1,219 m)] such as: Colorado, Montana, New
Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, northeastern Nevada,
Technical and consumer information 9-3
southern Idaho, western South Dakota, western
Nebraska, and the part of Texas which is directly
south of New Mexico.
Using unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating lower than stated above can cause
persistent, heavy “spark knock.” (“Spark
knock” is a metallic rapping noise.) If severe,
this can lead to engine damage. If you
detect a persistent heavy spark knock even
when using gasoline of the stated octane
rating, or if you hear steady spark knock
while holding a steady speed on level
roads, have a NISSAN dealer correct the
condition. Failure to correct the condition
is misuse of the vehicle, for which NISSAN
is not responsible."

Personally i feel a slight gain in power when i use 89. Well i take that back...i only notice that my truck feels slower with 87....maybe it's all in my head

I think that in some foreign contries where i have gone they dont use an octae number they use a RON ( Research Octane Number) that might not be truew though I am just thinking out loud here so maybe they put RON instead of octane number to stick with what they say over there in JAPAN
