Nissan usually manufactures their vehicles at about 70% of design capacity, meaning that the engine, drivetrain, etc. is usually at 70% of the available HP, TQ, etc. that represents their max. available output for a given design.
When I got my 350Z, the engineers I spoke with said the VQ35DETT in the Z was only at about 70% of its available HP/TQ. They have to be able to enhance the vehicles from year to year w/o re-designing everything.
Example: the most recent bump (after 2 model years) of the Z to 300 HP from 287.
Hope this helps. Nismo usually brings aftermarket products for their vehicles that help narrow the 70% gap, but they're usually just other companies' products that have been tested on Nissan vehicles and re-badged.
