I'm planning to purchase a tire chains for my OR package tire which is 285/70/17, but I need some advise on what to get. The place I will use it the most is in BigBear CA. I'm looking for the cable system, because people tells me its easy to put on.
Please share your experiences with a particular brand. ie, cable or chains, easy to put on, storing it for the next season, etc.
Don't bother. Just use 4WD. If you have a 2WD model and need tire chains..why didn't you get a 4WD? Just wondering. Sorry but I haven't used tire chains in over 25 years.
I made the mistake of buying a set of cables years ago. They actually provided less traction than just the tires w/o cables. They had metal sleeves on the cross cables that would just spin like journal bearings. Maybe they have improved since then.
If you have 2WD, putting weight in the bed (sandbags, etc.) will help alot. I used to drive a 1966 Chevy 2WD around Aspen in the winters with chains on the back and about 400 lbs of gravel in burlap bags in the bed. It did surprisingly well.
Location: Black Mountain, N.C. with the mountains and winding roads = FUN!!!

Super-Z-Cables
titanflava.......I use the Super-Z-Cables..from NAPA...~$100.......they are awesome......when my 4 wheel drive starts spinning going up a 45° hill in the snow or ice the cables go on and get me home every time.......same for going downhill......instead of going into a slide or breaking out in 4 wheel low going down the steep snow/ice hills the Z-cable gives amazing holdingpower. I would never use chains. Look at what the post-office, fire department, state troopers and rescue departments use... they all use the Super-Z- Cables. If you put the spring helper/clamps on the back like some others here you will have to remove them as they are way too close to the tire on the 17" wheel. Peace-Tom

I can second this! Be advised if you do chain up, make sure it is needed...weight in the bed usually does the trick. Be ready for sidewall damage on your drive tire and be ready to replace a tire. I ran mine for two weeks straight and ended up swapping in the spare once the side streets were passable.
And to the cranky, non-chain user ...when you get 6-7' (FEET) within a two week time frame, you need chains for that few weeks out of the year, the rest of the time you're going to be in 2wd anyway. 4wd's are fun, but the majority of time is spent on the street and it just wasn't practical for me.

I am not sure if this is concern on the titan, but when I had my jeep the manual stated that you can't use chains on 4x4's. Their reason was that the chains would cause the vehicle to obtain too much traction and damage the drive train. I do not know if anyone else has posted this or if it is true, but I thought that I would let you know.
Just to let everyone know, Titanflava has a 4x4 model, thats why he has the off road wheels and tires on his car, unless he purchased them from another titan owner...

That's the only reason I asked was to see if he had a 4X2...no disrespect of any kind was meant.
BTW, the 17" O/R wheels come with the Off-Road package, which can also be had on the 4X2 models. That's why I even bothered to ask. So unless maybe you know him and know he has a 4X4, the wheels aren't a dead givaway.
Last week I had to purchase tire chains for my Titan to make it home on very icy roads, three or four days of freezing rain.Around here winter tires and 4wd are usually enough. But compact snow and rain on top make it very hard to walk let alone drive.
The only time you need chains is when there is ICE or very slick mud. Other than that you can always make it in 4x4 with good M&S tires, unless you don't know how to drive very well. and that is just a matter of learning the vehicals limit and following them.
chains also ruin the road and make a 15 -20 year roads last 10 years. So if you can't drive then just stay off the road and call in dumb to your client or boss
