It is the switch that controls the cruise control. It is under the hood and has power to it all the time. From what I understand the switch can overheat and burn even if vehicle is not on or even if you have never used the cruise control. They, as first part of recall are disconnecting power from the switch until they can make enough of them to install.

Now if Nissan would only copy Ford and maybe also issue voluntary recalls for there brakes, windows falling off, etc, etc.

I think there has been 30 reported cases of fords with the fire problem out of a million being sold that year. Looking at the forums here, there must be like 50 people reporting brake problems out of 90,000 titans sold(and how many more that dont know about the forum here). You do the math percentage wise

To add to what terryu1 has said, the reason that the cruise control modulator is failing is because there is a rubber "gasket" on the bottom of the part that is deteriorating. Once the rubber deteriorates, water is allowed to penetrate the housing creating a shorting situation. Once "shorted out" they are overheating and catching on fire. Sitting or mobile, if water is present inside of the housing, the potential for fire is there.

Just wanted to remind everyone that is patting themselves on the back for owning a Nissan that Ford is hardly the only one with large recalls, or even those related to fires. Here are a few Nissan gems for you to enjoy.
Linky

Nissan van fire kills Florida couple.
January 31, 1994

A collision involving a 1998 Nissan van killed a Florida couple. The couple had responded to Nissan's fourth heat-related recall days before the accident. The Wall Street Journal revealed Nissan acknowledges that they bought and crushed more than 900 of its fire-plagued vans.

Nissan van class action settlement.
February 11, 1994

Nissan must buy back all that remain of the 33,000 fire prone mini vans it sold in the U.S. between 1987-1990 after pressure from a safety research firm and the NHTSA. The California class action agreement only gave van owner a $500 credit toward a vehicle brought from a Nissan dealer.

Nissan publishes a service bulletin.
June 4, 1996

The NHTSA closed the investigation on the Nissan Maxima and ZX engine compartment fires when Nissan said they would conduct a Voluntary Service Action.

Nissan recalls 130,000 cars.
June 18, 2001

Nissan recalled Sentras because of failing bolts that are critical to the front suspension of its 2001 model Sentras.

The NHTSA investigates Nissan airbags.
March 27, 2001

The NHTSA opened an auto defect investigation of passenger side airbags. The design of the airbags causes a high number of serious anatomical eye injuries that affects 300,000 Nissan Altima's. There are currently 40 injuries due to the defect.

Nissan recalls Sentras.
April 20, 2001

Nissan recalled about 14,500 1995-96 Nissan Sentras because during the winter on roads where salt are used the front coil spring can break from corrosion. The broken spring could lead to a punctured tire and loss of control of the vehicle. Nissan owners in certain states will be notified to replace the two front coil springs. Nissan owners in non-salt states will also be notified but will not have to repair the car unless they are going to expose their vehicle to road salt.

I should say that I'm not trying to flame anyone. I frequent about 10 different car message boards daily, and usually remain silent. However, there are times that I feel the need to keep the discussion honest.

Hey Just kidding.
Every year they recall everything from Airplane parts to Zymometers in this country. If you make a product and a bolt fails on just one. You recall all 100,000 and change that bolt just to be safe.

Absolutely! I was just getting ready to post the story about the couple that got fried in their Niddan Van - the full story - that they had just had it in for the SAME repair for the 3rd time - then and only then - Nissan was forced to recall & buy back ALL remaining models on the road. It took a class action lawsuit & government intervention to make them do so.

I'm not bashing Nissan _ I still own one -and have always had on in the garage sfor 20 years - I just think we should keep the facts in their proper perspective.

Ford has other problems, something about Crown Victoria Police Interceptors being prone to becoming fire traps when rear-ended. It seems the fuel tanks get easily ruptured by poor design.

Buy a Ford and get a free car-b-que.

Every car manufacturer has had its issues, including GM with its pick-up trucks fuel tank placement outside the frame, remember those?

I take no joy in seeing other manufacturers f/ups. But 800,000 is a lot of vehicles.
