What's with Popular Mechanics comment about the Titan?

Popular Mechanics magazine, March 2005 edition, page 46. Report on the Titan. which included:

"The 28-gal. fuel tank offers a 350-mile range, but the required premium fuel mean $50 fill-ups".

Required PREMIUM fuel? Where did they get that info? Is there something they know that we don't? Maybe we should ALL send an e-mail to Popular Mechanics pointing out their mistake.

Yep,

Seems to be a fav...among writers...that premium fuel. I heard the same about the Tundra's engine requiring premium. The *holes at their dealership never got far enough with me to be asked if their piece took premium fuel. Thankfully, I found the Titan!

I don't know if it's printed elsewhere, but when I was looking for a Titan back in September, I picked up an '04 Titan sales brochure that has an insert inside it. Under the engine section of the insert, it says "Premium fuel required."

Here we go again.

Everyone should look at page 9-3 of their owners manual for the fuel recommendation.

87 ANTI-KNOCK INDEX
or
RESEARCH OCTANE NUMBER 91

Depending on your part of the country this may or not be premium.

premium fuel is DEFINETLY required. my truck detonates on 87 bad. i alternate tanks of 89 and 93 just to keep the cost down a bit. since i started doing this, no pinging. i can only imagine what these trucks would do running on that piss water that the west coast gets.

My truck runs just fine on 'left coast' 87...

I also get more than 350 miles on a tank...We Avg right at just over 16MPG over 12k miles....that would put my range @ 448 per tank if I ran a full 28 gals through.

Chris

Ive never run out of gas, but I still always fall for my trucks low fuel light. Every time it comes up, I fill up just to be safe. However, Ive never filled more than 21.5 gallons (and it still costs close to $50) Regular here is at $2.036 average but ranges from $1.95 - $2.19 around here (don't ask me how the freaking $2.19 people get away with it)

Similar to Chris, I have almost 15,000 miles over 7 months, gas from multiple vendors, including the major oil companies as well as RaceTrack, etc. in both Louisiana and Texas-- never put anything in her but 87 octane and have never had a problem, including several thousand miles pulling heavy trailer loads of 8000+ lbs.
