What about the transfer case fluid?

It's recommended to change the Front and Rear Diffs to synthetic fluid, but what about the transfer case should I change that to synthetic or just stick to Nissan Matic D ATF, and what about the Transmission should I change that too?

Dude, dont do JACK to your AFT or xfer case if it uses the same kinda fluid as the tranny. Nissan Titan calls for a VERY spacific fluid type for those components. If you use other, you will void your warranty. Check your owner manual and do a search on here under tranny fluid or something simular to get full details.

Yeah, I think the Nissan Fluid runs about $10/qt from the dealer. As of now, there is no substitute for the Nissan tranny fluid.

The transmission (Nissan J) and transfer case (Nissan D) use different fluids.

JetTech's excellent "How To" is here:

Interest letter I found off a bimmer board.

THOMAS R. SMITH
Technical Director, Valvoline Brand
June 7, 2004

To Whom It May Concern:

Valvoline has received several inquiries regarding the topic of MERCON V ATF and its use in various vehicles beyond those requiring DEXRON-III, MERCON, or MERCON V approved products. In response to these questions Valvoline has issued the following statements:

Valvoline supports the use of MERCON V ATF in a broad range of transmissions beyond those requiring DEXRON-III, MERCON, and MERCON V fluids including those where the following fluids are recommended:

o GM DEXRON II
o Allison C-4
o Chrysler ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluids
o Toyota (and Lexus) Type T, T-III or T-IV fluids
o Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II or SP-III fluids
o Hyundai
o Honda ATF-Z1 fluid (except in CVTs)
o BMW LT71141 or LA2634 fluids
o Nissan Matic-D, Matic-J, or Matic-K fluids

MaxLife ATF is recommended for the new 5 and 6 speed transmissions, except the Ford 5R110, Ford 6RXX, and the Mercedes Benz W7A700 (7G-TRONIC) which all require a low viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Valvoline has conducted in-house testing to support MERCON V ATF performance in these transmissions. However, it is important to note that these vehicle manufacturers have neither evaluated nor approved MERCON V ATF.

Valvoline stands behind all of its products, including MERCON V ATF. Use of MERCON V ATF in transmissions where recommended by Valvoline WILL NOT void the vehicle’s warranty. In the unlikely event that any transmission was to be damaged as a result of the use of MERCON V ATF,
please contact Valvoline at 1-800-Team-VAL.

Valvoline does not recommend MaxLife ATF for use in continuously variable transmissions (CVT’s) or in automatic transmissions where Ford Type F is recommended.

Sincerely,
Thom Smith
Technical Director
Valvoline Brand

"Use of MERCON V ATF in transmissions where recommended by Valvoline WILL NOT void the vehicle’s warranty."

Now if they can just get Nissan to sign off on that.

This is not surprising, as I don't think Nissan makes ATF. So somebody else is making Nissan Matic fluids, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out the identical ATF fluid is sold under a different brand name.

I had to have the transfer case fluid refilled because the driveshaft was leaking when I bought the truck. They used their regular old tranny fluid to refill it...nothing special.

fluid's

Is your Titan a 2004 or 2005? The 2005 uses 75w-140 syn in the rear differential case and 75w-90 in the front. I believe it also uses 75w-90 in the transfer case. I'm on my way to Nissan today to question this and all the capicities. I intend to switch to amsoil in all cases. I just did my oil.
I don't have the manual so I'll check with the service tech's at Nissan. I'll update tonight when I get the confirmed info.

The transfer case DOES NOT use differential fluid! It's automatic transmission fluid. You'll void your warranty and ruin the transfer case if you use diff. fluid.

HudsonValleyTitan, yup your right. The tech said trany fluid in the trans case. The front was still 75w-90 and the rear is now 75w-140 syn. I just did my differencials. Real easy, the fluid wasn't burnt but did have the metal dust stuck to the magnetic plug. I have 6000 miles and glad I changed them.

Re: What about the transfer case fluid?

I'm stumped by this one.
My owners manual states that for the United States to use Nissan type J ATF

For Canada to use Mercon or DexronIII. What's up with this? Do they use different transmissions and transfer cases in Canada??

By the service manual ('05) it states Nissan Matic D ATF for the transfer or Dexron III, Mercon.
