Navigation reported mpg

I was putting in my reverse camera today and was looking at the service manual to find the reverse signal at the nav unit....well while I was reading through I discovered that the avg MPG shown on the NAV is only a running 30minute average and not an overall average which I thought it was.

That would explain why my mileage is typically 1 to 1.5mpg less than what the nav is telling me.

I believe that's telling you it's updated every 30 minute. Not that it's a 30 minute average.

I don't know, the display updates more frequently than 30 minute intervals. I've noticed when I go on a highway trip the mileage jumps up a couple mpg fairly fast so I think it must be just a 30 minute average.

I think it is more than a 30 min average. I can pull a boat, get about 10 miles to the gallon and if I dont reset it, it takes many days to start coming back up.

Same here. The reason you may be seeing it shift so much is because you are watching it with low miles. Try watching it when you get about 150miles on the tank and then you will see that it will change, but slowly.

It keeps track of the whole tank. Something you may want to consider is odo error. Mine can be about 4% off (on the low side) which would affect your calculation of mpg.

Mine was just a guess since I don't have it on my truck. Keep an eye on it and let us know how well it works.
