Slight noise when in 4x4

We noticed this little malfunction when test driving a titan with a "clunck" noise. Put the truck in 4x4 drove in a straight line at 5 mph, and when we accelerated, we heard a gunshot noise from front diff. (kinda looks like a gunshot too) On another forum, I know of a guy in Florida this happened to also. Take care when in 4x4!!!

All I can say is WOW. Take a chunk in the teeth to blow the case like that.

Was this a vehicle in for service or one being test driven for purchase?

It didn't explode. I don't believe that for a second! Looking at the case, it looks like they hit something hard. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Since I am the lead tech on the job, I can tell you.... you couldnt be more wrong. I was in it when it broke. Nice try though!

Would a picture of the front of the truck help? Its missing a diff though.
If you look where the break is, its due to pinoin rolling. I have seen this before in a Chevy 1500 before where the truck had a bent frame and the front diff was bound up. But the Titan in this case came from a dealer, and had 12 miles on it. Still a *****en truck. I would just prefer a 2wd myself.

Good point there. Let me offer some explaination. Since I am not a Titan owner (i would if could, they are awsome), I thought I could post this on this forum to see if there were more issues out there. Then I could collect more usefull info. As far as TSB's from Nissan, I have nothing. That is why I only have a 3 post history. Serious, this happened on a test drive.

LMAO...BS! Nice try on your part though. They just don't "explode". That was smashed into something. Quite fitting that you just happened to be the "lead tech" AND were in it when it happened. You'll find no idiots on this forum.

How come nobody believes this? Before when something like this happened, people said "show us pictures", but nobody ever did. Well, here is a guy with pictures, and he is still being dismissed as a troll.
The rear diff has shown itself to be a weak point of our trucks, that is enough of a reason for me to be concerned about the front diff and hear him out. I know quite a few guys that hammer a variety of trucks offroad, and some that have been in accidents, but nobody has ever broken a rear like this.
My only suspicion is that the case looks pretty dirty for a truck with 12 miles on it, but I attributed that to crap sticking on the lost oil.

Well, All winter I have wondered why my truck made more noise when I put it into 4wd. My Frontier wasn't like this. I had it in last week for an oil change and had them look at it. My new front diff. is on order. They haven't said what was wrong with it, but the parts manager did say mine was the 3rd to go. Trust me, this dealer hasn't sodl a lot of titans. Mine was the 2nd and I got it last April. I am still driving as they told me it was fine as long as I didn't put it into 4wd.

I will ask the service mgr. what was wrong when the new diff. comes in.

Question since you are a lead tec...........

Well my Titan has about 8,700 miles on it now....and I use the 4 wheel hi and lo ranges several times each day up and down steep mountain roads. I changed the front and rear differentials early on to 75-140W synthetic. When I changed the fluids no metal bits came out. I have gunned the throttle many times in the 4 wheel ranges. So far no problems in those departments with the Titan. When some have problems and some don't I call that poor quality control on NISSAN's part.
kbaeta since you are a lead tec..can you come up with an explanation for the "downshift shudder or drivetrain backlash" I and others would appreciate it much!!! Thanks for any help and the pics. of the blown diffie.!!
Peace-Tom Bass Ale
