air conditioner stuck on!

Arrrrrrghhhhhh!!! Driving home yesterday afternoon, I turned on the defrost to get the fog off the inside of the windshield. After a while, I turned it back to the face vents so the A/C should turn off. After about 10 minutes, the air was still spitting out ice cold from the face vents. I checked the A/C and it wasn't turned on, then I crancked on the heat all the way and it wouldn't get hot, only warm. After driving 40 minutes home, I parked the truck, popped the hood and felt the compressor. It was ice cold and had condensation all over it, indicating it had been on the whole time.

After an hour, I got back on the road to run some erands. The A/C wasn't still on, so I started experimenting. I turned on the A/C via the push button, then turned it off. That woked. So, I again try the defroster. BINGO! It wouldn't turn back off again. I stopped, turned the truck off, then restarted after a minute. A/C was off once again.

What gives?!

That's actually normal on all Titan's. I think it's a software glitch or something. If you turn the fan off then back on it will reset itself and go back to normal until you turn the defroster back on.

Well, I tried that too and it didn't seem to work either. I was thinking it's got something to do maybe with the pressure built up in the compressor while the thing is defrosting, then it won't bleed off properly when disengaged.

It's weird, but normal for Nissan. Once you turn either the defrost or the AC on, the only way to shut down the compressor is to turn off the ignition and restrt with mode set to a different setting. There have been a jillion discussions about this, some actually think it's good that the AC is on when you defrost, but the real issue is that you cannot turn the friggin thing off unless you shut the truck off. Annoying: yes. Defect: no.

That's got to be the most stupid friggin' thing I've heard! If they did actually design it like that, then that's just plain stupid. I don't want to have the A/C on in the winter after I turn off the defrost - the air won't heat the cabin!

So, you guys are telling me if I turn the system completely off, then turn the knob from the defrost to the face vents, it'll turn off? I'll try it. Hopefully that'll work.

No, it will NOT turn the AC off. The light may go off, and you can turn up the temp with it on, but the compressor will still run. The only way to turn it off is to turn the truck off, then re-start.
I'm sure the egg-heads thought it was a good idea to have the compressor switch on when you hit defrost, as the dried air will clear off a foggy windshield better, and I really don't mind that as long as I have the option to turn the compressor off, whether in defrost or in any other mode.
Friggin egg-heads.

Sort of staying on topic:
Why is there a click sound made when turning the dial to the coldest setting?

#1- I agree...
#2- I don't hink so... You have to turn the truck off and then start it up again for the compressor to turn completely off.

Hey, I appreciate it! When my manager isn't sitting next to me, I'll read though it and see if it'll help.

Did Tim Truett ever get back to you if that mod worked or not? I looked at that drawing he made and......I need to quit drinking! Well, maybe not!

This is not only the Titan. All Nissans do this. It started with the 03 models. Your owners manual explains how it works but...it doesn't explain WHY! if you put the DEF mode on for more than a minute, the compressor will not shut off unless the vehicle is shut off or the system is turned off. The latter shuts everything off but unless the truck is shut off, the compressor will come back on if you turn the fan back on. Strange if you ask me.

So do you really think that this is costing you anything? After 23,000 miles I vote no.

you guys are saying that this is a kinda blanket thing as in it happens with all trucks or at least thats what i think your saying correct me if i am wrong?? but I swear on my life i have never exprienced this problem in the entire time of owning my truck if I turn off the defrost the compressor goes off without shutting off the titan and I still get full heat and as far as I know my dealership has done nothing and neither have I that may affect this in anyway

so what i am saying is my titan defected becuase of the lack of a defect?? although I am happey without it I am confused
