Re: Truck Trend's pick for best extended cab truck
I just traded my Titan in on a 2006 Chevy 1500 Z-71. The Titan has a lot more power, the interior is so much better looking, the exterior the Titan has it beat hands down, the suspension is much stiffer and handles better, when towing my bass boat I didn't even know it was back there with the Titan but the Chevy bounces down the road, the Titan didn't even have to downshift to go up a hill but the Chevy you have to floor it to go up the same hill, the Titan has a 5 speed transmission and the Chevy basically has a 3 speed with overdrive even though they call it a 4 speed. The Titan has more interior room and the engine has had no problems and probably never will.
The Chevy I got fully loaded OTD for around $25k while the Titan fully loaded is around $36k. That gives me $11k to customize the truck the way I want it. The Chevy has not changed much over the past decade but it doesn't have problems. 200k miles and only doing scheduled service is very realistic out of the Chevy while the Titan very few people on this board can say that they haven't had any problems and most don't have much more than 15k miles. I personally had a new problem come out of my truck just about every week. I had 58k miles on the truck when I traded it in and I had every intention of keeping the truck but I didn't feel I could rely on it and the PT warranty was about to expire. The Chevy truck has many more options since you can get 3 different V-8's, standard, ex cab and crew cab with the options of short or long bed. GMAC offers better financing rates than Nissan Motor Co. The Chevy gets better gas mileage and there are many many more aftermarket parts and mods available. Westers is offering a chip swap and they are getting a 50 HP increase (on a dyno) at the rear wheels for $519 shipped. If the Chevy does have a problem such as a water pump, alternator or radiator you can get it fixed the same day for a couple hundred bucks compared to the Titan where you have to take it to the dealer and wait a couple days for the part and pay over a grand. Chevy's service department treats you more like a customer than a price tag like Nissan and they offer loaner cars when your truck is screwed up. On the Chevy the insurance is cheaper and the resale value Chevrolet (4x4) has now passed the Titan back up.
Do I miss my Titan? You bet! Do I regret trading it in on a Chevy? Not for a second. Do I feel that the Titan is the better truck on paper? All day long. Which do I think is more practical and reliable? The Chevy has Titan beat easily. Hopefully Nissan can get the problems they have had worked out because if they do it is easily the best full size truck on the market today but until they do it is probably the most unreliable truck of the big 4.
