Rear Axle Seal Leaking??

I was looking under the truck this afternoon and the inside of the left rear wheel is leaking. Looks like it's been going on for a long while, as the buildup is around the inside of the rim. I called a mechanic buddy of mine who said it sounds like a leaking rear axle seal. He said this would be a manufacturers defect and he has seen this happen before. Thid would also be the start of a rear end problem, me thinks. Anyone seen this? Thoughts? To the dealer it goes tomorrow. 5,900 miles, '04. - Jim

Might want to ensure you have enough fluid in the pumpkin before driving around anymore, if it's been leaking for a while like you say, it might be pretty low.

I searched and can't find any listed. I've been here since August and can't remember anyone else having this problem. Hope your truck is fixed and as good as new.

Well, my only thought is that it obviously shouldn't be happening and you should get your butt to te dealer ASAP! Not that my post helps, but I just felt like being supportive.

Fluid was switched to Synthetic per there recommendation about 500 miles ago, so fluid level was fine. About 2 months ago when I was in there, they checked the fluid, all was well. - Jim

hmmmm...synthetic will always find the small imperfection and leak. usually axle bearing seals hold up well though.

I had a rear diff cover resealed under warrenty and as for a rear seal being a sign of things to come I highly doubt it unless the seal was very hard and you grooved the axle but that would still be a warrenty issue GL

Hey if they have to work on it, ask them to count the splines on the axle shaft when it is removed for seal replacement.

Please.

It's probably 30... like most D44s.

I may go pull a shaft tonight and tell ya. I'm interested in what axle bearings we have, as well as the spline count. Would have been nice if Nissan had specified a full float rear.

Confirmed what I thought from the dealer who called a little while ago --- leaking rear axle seal. "Manufacturer's defect" I am told. Part on order.

Another rear axle seal leak

Mine too. Went to the dealer yesterday here in Roswell, GA. Spotted the leak the day before. They had to order the part.

Lugnut, Be sure to check for leakage after they replace the seal. I had my left rear axle seal and bearing replaced couple of weeks ago due to a small leak. Took a trip to Seattle and noticed that a new leak had developed which seemed larger (more oil present). Just returned today from dealer and service rep said problem was in the axle housing itself, the opening where the seal goes is not perfectly round and therefore the replacement seal leaked also.

I give them credit for admitting that a defect in this particular housing exists instead of using some super heavy duty sealer around another seal and hoping for the best. They ordered a complete new rear axle which they gave me an ETA of 3-4 days. If it comes in with the new finned cover, I'll be selling the one I bought and installed when I noticed the first leak.

I have nothing but praise for the Tim Dahle Titan Murray/Salt Lake service department. For those in the area, talk to John or Shane.
