Strange grinding sound on front wheel?

My daughter and I were out Turkey hunting last week and it was really muddy and wet on the ranch road we were on. All of a sudden the drivers side front wheel started making noises like it was grinding on metal to metal. Prior to that when going through some mud puddles the brakes would sort of shudder a bit but not all the time and only when they were in a wet situation.

Panic imediatly set in as I have another week of turkey hunting and don't need the truck down. It squealed all the way to the gravel road and then stopped completly and hasn't happened again even under the same conditions except the brakes do shutter once in a while. Now, I'm a pretty good gunsmith (retired) and am mechnically inclined towards them but when it comes to vehicles I am as dumb as cat s---. Has this happened to anyone else. O5 SE 4X4
Thanks
Dan

Hasn't happened to me, but sounds like you possibly got a gock jammed in there somehow.

Pull the wheel off and check between the brake pads and the rotor.

I agree with the other two posts. Sounds like you picked up some debris going through those mud holes. If I was you I would check my Rotors to see if there are any deep scratches.

When I had the brake fix done on my 04 last fall, there was a nasty grinding sound that sounded like it would cut the rotor in two. I couldn't hardly stand to drive it. I got the shop mgr to go for a ride with me and he agreed something wasn't right. They put it on the lift and found a small rock had wedged itself between the backing plate and the spindle. This was forcing the backing plate into the backside of the rotor and it made one hell of a noise. Because I caught it quickly, all it did was put a nice razor edge on my backing plate, but didn't hurt the rotor. You might check this first..could be a really easy fix.

Do you have VDC? If so were you getting the slip light? From some previous posts some of what you experienced sounds like VDC kicking in. Try this thread it may help. If this doen't help try a search for grinding or VDC. Strange front end noise when sliding in snow?

i also had the strange grinding, on mine it was the bone head rookie mechanic that thought he was working on a maxima. he put grease on the back side of the pads. if it needed grease why would it have peel and stick? any how look on the back of your pads for orange grease, if its there youve found the problem.
